This was interesting. We had the fluoride conversation in the office a couple of times this past week, and I know that everyone has to make up their mind about which side of the fence to be on, but a recent study showed that proper amounts of fluoride were beneficial in adults.

Study Links Fluoride Exposure To Enhanced Cognitive Performance In Adolescents

Dental Tribune International (12/2) reported that a new study published in Science Advances on November 21, 2025, found that adolescents exposed to recommended fluoride levels in drinking water demonstrated better cognitive performance in mathematics, reading, and vocabulary. Conducted using the High School and Beyond cohort dataset, the study analyzed over 58,000 students and found positive associations with cognitive outcomes in adolescence, though effects in later adulthood were smaller. The research challenges claims of cognitive harm from typical fluoridation and supports ongoing water fluoridation policy debates.

What is the appropriate amount of fluoride inthe diet? Dental organizations have agreed that 0.7ppm in drinking water is the optimum level. So what amount are you getting in your water? If you drink tap water, then you need to know what amount is in your tap. A water report for your area can be requested from the city or the county. If you drink bottled water with fluoride in it, the amount may be listed on the label or it can be found on the company website.

The most important thing to remember is that systemic fluoride is necessary while the teeth are developing, and topical fluoride is necessary to help keep the teeth resistant to decay after eruption. I'm a firm believer in fluoride, and I respect those who are not users of it. Plaque is the beginning of the two evils in the mouth - cavities and gum disease. If you can keep the plaque from building on the teeth, you stand a better chance at reducing your chances of cavities and periodontal disease. As one of my hygienists used to say - BRUSHA BRUSHA BRUSH-AH!!! I always wanted her to add in - FLOSSA FLOSSA FLOSS-AH!!! as well.

Just a quick update. Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers, phone calls and text messages to check on me. I'm healing up well after my rotator cuff surgery. Dr Branch and the team from TOC Now and Panama City Surgery Center did a fantastic job on my surgery. The team at our dental office took care of everything around the office, handling scheduled and emergency patients and checking in on me over the past three weeks. But my biggest thanks is to the love of my life Sharman who has been my nurse, chef, pharmacist, chauffeur, therapy advisor, you name it. I've been able to get a few things done while at home, at least as much as my shoulder and Sharman would let me do. Let's just say that I won't be needing to complete any CE hours anytime soon. As nice as it's been having some time off, I am looking forward to getting back to work. Thank you all again.

Hallelujah, PTL! Internet and email are back online. Thanks WOW!

Well, it looks like our internet access at the office is offline right now so our phones and email aren't working until Knology gets us back up and running. Sorry. We'll make a post when the system is back up.

As a number of our patients know, I had rotator cuff surgery Thursday morning by Dr Eric Branch from TOC Now and the team at Panama City Surgery Center. Everything is going well. My arm is still partially numb from the anesthetic block but I haven't had any issues with the general anesthesia. I knew early on that God directed me Dr Branch and TOC Now, but gave me even more assurance when I had some excellent and very spiritual conversations with Carman and Janna. It was obvious that they not only love what they do but they love the Lord while doing it.

Even though I'll be out of work for a few weeks to heal, our office is still open for scheduled cleanings. Two of the hygiene team, Samantha and Brandi, will be there for patient treatment, and my assistant, Shelly, will be there for any emergencies or aligner deliveries. The front desk team, Amanda and Dale, will be there as well to answer the phones and take care of the day to day stuff that they handle better than I ever could. I'm so blessed to work with them, or for them, I guess is the better phrase, so please rest assured, we'll still be here to take care of your dental needs as best we can.

My wife is being the best nurse possible. She's keeping me on my meds and making sure that I'm comfortable and not over-doing it. I'm extremely grateful for God bringing her into my life. Shes my best friend and my partner in Christ, and I couldn't ask for anyone better to live my life with.

Thank you for all your thoughts and prayers. I appreciate you all for being a part of our dental family and I look forward to many more years of doing what I love, where I love doing it and who I get to work on everyday. Everyone take care and have a blessed day!

My thoughts and prayers are still going out for my family and friends over in Madison, Perry, Mayo and Tallahassee who got hit hard from Helene. Please stay stong and patient as the crews are working to get power, gas, septic and water back up and running.

09/26/2024

In anticipation of the coming weather, our office will be closed Thursday and Friday. Please everyone, be safe and watch out for each other, and pray for God's protection for those in the path of the storm.
