It is officially the countdown to spring! As we begin to spring clean our homes, refresh our wardrobes and increase our outdoor activities, we should also look to spring clean our bodies. Within Functional Medicine, detox has a specific definition: it is the process of reducing the body’s toxic load by lessening exposure to harmful chemicals we are taking in, while simultaneously implementing nutrition and lifestyle strategies to promote efficient elimination of toxins from the body. We offer a Spring Detox Program to support our patients so they feel re-energized as they move into warmer weather. Call our office for more information.

“After doing my own research on Functional Medicine, I made my initial appointment with Michelle McCaslin to assist me with bio-identical hormone replacement and hair loss. My previous practitioner didn’t use an in-depth approach, so it wasn’t very individualized. Michelle digs deep and I am learning so much about how my body is a map and all the moving pieces affect each other.

I’m happy to report that my hormones are in a good place and I can tell by my emotions if something needs to be adjusted. I took for granted how big of an affect liver and gut health play into hormone balance. Michelle suggested various supplements to support my body and strongly encouraged me to implement a clean eating diet. I started taking the vitamins, but didn’t feel that the dietary changes were necessary because I didn’t have any other issues outside of needing hormone replacement. It took me longer than I’m happy to admit that my diet was the one thing that needed to change immediately. It was a mental block that kept me from reaching my goals and feeling my best.

I have inflammation due to years of being overweight and not eating clean or supporting my body. From Michelle, I have learned about other therapies such as: infrared sauna, lymphatic massage and acupuncture. I am now on my own health journey, supported by Michelle, reading, listening to podcasts and finally clean eating. I am still working on my health goals, and am continuing to see improvement. I have more clarity, energy and feel less puffy and inflamed. I doubt I would be this excited and committed to the future had I not found Michelle; in all honesty, she really opened my eyes.”

What's for lunch? All organic chicken veggie soup! I used all organic ingredients. Add more or less veggies depending on what you have on hand.

INGREDIENTS:
1 bag Bonafide (brand) organic turkey bone broth
1 pound of organic Mary's (brand) chicken thighs, diced and browned in coconut oil. Season with pink salt, smoked paprika and garlic powder.
1 onion, diced
1 1/2 cups of shredded cabbage
3 carrots, sliced
3 celery stalks, diced
2 small parsnips, peeled & diced
1 cup of frozen green beans
1 heaping teaspoon of thyme (because everybody needs more thyme!!)

DIRECTIONS:
After browning the chicken, add the onion, celery and carrots, Lightly saute adding more coconut oil or ghee as needed. Add the rest of the veggies, bone broth and thyme. Simmer 30 minutes covered, or until veggies are tender. Enjoy!

We are a society of sleep deprived, stressed individuals. Take control of your disrupted sleep patterns by: addressing underlying issues, reducing sugar intake and practicing stress reduction techniques.

Stress can affect your sleep wake cycles in numerous ways. It could be stress from psychological sources like work, family, and finances. It could be stress from physical incidents such as lack of exercise, too much screen time, junk food intake, toxic lifestyle or living environment, and imbalanced hormones. It could be a combination of both types of stress.

Employ these strategies to optimize your nutrition so you handle stress effectively and get high-quality sleep throughout the whole night:

- Try to incorporate an eating schedule and cut out all munching no later than three hours before bed.

- Start timing your sugar intake and remember to reduce your consumption of white breads, flours, rice, and potatoes as they also raise blood sugar.

- One hour before bed, write down the things that cause you anxiety. Make plans for what you might have to do the next day to reduce your worry.

- Develop regular rhythms of sleep.

- Create total darkness and quiet and avoid electronic devices

- Maximize daylight exposure for at least 20 minutes daily.

And if you’re still having trouble sleeping, get checked out for other problems that can interfere with sleep including: food sensitivities, thyroid problems, menopause, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, heavy metal toxicity, stress, and depression.

We are a product of our environment. Some things we may not consider affecting us are EMFs. Did you know regular cell phone use by adults can increase the risk of gliomas (brain tumors) by 40%? Cell phones, tablets, laptops and other devices are a modern marvel, but what if the radiation is causing a multitude of unexplained health problems? Cordless phones, WiFi, smart meters, microwave ovens, video games consoles, and even the electrical wiring in your home all emit potentially deadly electromagnetic fields (EMFs). EMF exposures are linked to a long list of serious diseases including cancer.

Functional Medicine looks at environmental exposures when addressing autoimmune conditions.

Individuals exposed to paint, varnish and other solvents who carry genes that make them more susceptible to developing MS may be at increased risk for developing the disease, as published in the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
