A broken heart- whether from the loss of a loved one, a breakup, a distant move, the loss of a pet, or receiving devastating news- is a very real thing.
I have seen enough evidence to believe that emotional pain from a broken heart can negatively affect physical health. When the mind experiences very powerful emotions, it can produce a physical reaction.
Research has found that people who have recently had their heart broken experience similar brain activity when shown photos of their loved one as they do when in physical pain. Researchers concluded that rejection, emotional, and physical pain are all processed in the same regions of the brain. This could be because both the sympathetic and parasympathetic activation systems are triggered simultaneously.
A broken heart can lead to changes in appetite, lack of motivation, stomach pain, feeling sick to your stomach, headaches, and m. If left unaddressed, overtime those unhealed emotional wounds can transition into depression, anxiety, withdrawal from friends/family/hobbies, isolation, and weight loss or weight gain. In extreme cases, the effects can be debilitating such as a stroke or heart attack.
While an individual is mourning their loss and waiting for their broken heart to heal, the good news is there are ways to find comfort by balancing emotions energetically to remove the stress associated with loss. Most people who experience heartbreak coupled with biofeedback therapies make a full recovery within a couple weeks.
