✨ Favorite Friday Gene: MnSOD
If there’s one gene that tells me a lot about how someone may be aging at the cellular level, it’s MnSOD. 🧬
What is it?
MnSOD is a major antioxidant enzyme inside your mitochondria (your cell’s power plants). Its job is to neutralize free radicals made during energy production.
This gene sits in ALL of these pathways on the genetic test I specialize in:
- Oxidative Stress
- Inflammation
- Memory and Brain Health
- Hormone Balance
- Recovery
Just think about this… the above pathways are so crucial to have under control if we want to slow down aging and THRIVE in midlife. If someone has a high impacted MnSOD gene, this information is so invaluable and we can take smart actions to better protect ourselves!
See second slide showing MY high impacted MnSOD.😳
Why does it matter so much for aging well?
Oxidative stress is basically “rusting” at the cellular level. If MnSOD is slower due to genetics, your mitochondria may struggle to clean up that oxidative load — which can accelerate:
• inflammation
• fatigue / low energy
• metabolic slowdown
• faster cellular aging
Did you know we are supposed to make our OWN antioxidants? Yup.
MnSOD is one of your built-in antioxidant makers. So when it’s a weak spot, your body needs smarter support — not just random supplements. And… can’t eat enough blueberries to make up for this!
This is why NRF2 is my #1 recommendation here and I won’t stop talking about it.
NRF2 is the master switch that turns on a whole network of antioxidant and detox genes — including MnSOD. When NRF2 is activated, MnSOD expression increases and mitochondrial defense improves.
✨ Bottom line:
MnSOD tells us how well your mitochondria are protected from oxidative stress — and that protection is foundational for energy, metabolism, inflammation control, and aging with resilience.
