Mitchell Funeral Home has been serving families since 1923, when it first opened on Pruett Street in downtown Paragould. In 1967, the funeral home moved to West Kingshighway before relocating to its current home at 1520 Highway 49 North.

The funeral home was owned and operated by the Mitchell family for many years before being purchased in 2018 by Billy Curl, an Army veteran and funeral director with more than 30 years of experience.

In the early days, families sometimes paid burial insurance premiums with chickens, eggs, or vegetables—whatever they had of value. While times have changed, our commitment has not. We still believe every family deserves compassionate service and fair, reasonable pricing.

Today, our dedicated staff—Billy Curl, Matt DeJarnett, Phil Cable, Logan Buck, Bernard Raley, and Stanna Miller—are proud to serve families throughout Greene and Clay counties with the same care and attention that has defined our funeral home for more than a century.

We are honored to continue the legacy of service that began over 100 years ago. If you ever have questions about pre-planning, burial policies, or funeral arrangements, give us a call at 870-236-7765 or stop by our office.

3 Reasons Families Choose to Pre-Plan

Planning ahead isn’t always easy to think about — but for many families, it’s one of the most thoughtful gifts they can give their loved ones.

Here are three important reasons families choose to pre-plan:

1️⃣ Peace of Mind
Pre-planning ensures your wishes are clearly documented. Your family won’t have to guess about important decisions during an already emotional time.

2️⃣ Reduced Stress for Loved Ones
When arrangements are made in advance, your family is relieved from making difficult choices while grieving. It allows them to focus on supporting one another and honoring your life.

3️⃣ Financial Clarity
Pre-planning gives you the opportunity to explore options at your own pace and lock in decisions ahead of time, helping avoid unexpected financial burdens later.

Pre-planning is about care, consideration, and protecting the people you love.

If you’d like more information about how the process works, we’re here to answer your questions — whenever you’re ready.

A Little History Of Our Past

Mitchell Funeral Home was founded in 1923. The original funeral home was located on Pruett street in downtown Paragould, and later moved to its current location at 2307 West Kingshighway in 1967. The funeral home was owned and managed by the Mitchell family until its recent sale in 2018 to Billy Curl of Blytheville, Arkansas. Richard “Dick” Mitchell still continues to work part time at the funeral home, which is now managed by Andrew Cavaness of Rector, Arkansas. Other employees include Phil Cable, Mike Schwamb, Sandra Holt Watson, and Terry Cable

In the early days of the funeral home, a person could pay for their burial insurance premiums with chickens, eggs, vegetables, and other things of value. While that is no longer the custom, our funeral home continues to believe in fair prices. Our long-standing tradition has been to provide the finest facilities and service at a reasonable price. We know the importance of helping each family plan the funeral they want, within their own budget. Having the very best does not have to cost the most.

Today, Mitchell Funeral Home is large enough to give our families the same services as the largest funeral homes around, yet we are small enough that each family receives the level of attention and care they want and deserve. We are proud that our staff has deep roots in Clay and Greene counties. They take pride to provide you with a reputation of trust and a promise of professional service presented in a caring manner. Our staff dedicates themselves to making each service a special time of remembrance to your loved one, honoring them and celebrating their life. We are continuing the proud legacy that started nearly 100 years ago.
