πŸ”‹ It is National Check Your Battery Day (March 9)! While you test your smoke detectors, make sure you handle old batteries correctly.

Most household batteries β€” including AA, AAA and lithium-ion β€” are classified as "universal waste." They contain hazardous materials, and it is prohibited by law to toss them in your regular trash or recycling bin.

Keep and your family safe with these tips:
βœ… Store old batteries in a dry place out of reach of children
βœ… Place masking tape over the terminals (the ends) to prevent sparks
βœ… Residential accounts (one-three units) can schedule a free e-waste curbside pick-up by calling Athens Services at (562) 259-1239 at least one day before your trash day
βœ… Drop off your batteries at City Hall, Paramout Sheriff's Substation, the Community Center, Spane Park, or the Coummunity Services Office.

πŸ”— Learn more at www.paramountcity.gov/trash-recycling-programs/, and let’s keep hazardous materials out of our landfills! β™»οΈπŸš›

⏰ Daylight Saving Time begins Sunday, March 8.

As we "spring forward" and set our clocks ahead one hour, it is the perfect time to refresh your spring safety checklist!

βœ… Test every alarm in your house. Replace the batteries immediately if they are more than a year old or if the device "chirps."
βœ… Ensure vents for your dryer, stove and furnace are clear of debris to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
βœ… Check the expiration dates on food and water in your emergency kits. Make sure your first aid kit is fully stocked.
βœ… Gather expired or unwanted medications. Do not flush them, instead, bring them to a local prescription drop box or take-back event.

Be prepared and stay safe, ! β˜€οΈπŸ› οΈ

πŸš— that most vehicle burglaries are preventable?

Protect your property by establishing a simple routine, and locking your door is the first line of defense against theft. Thieves often walk through neighborhoods simply pulling on door handles looking for an easy target β€” don’t let it be your vehicle.

Take these steps every time you park:
βœ… Ensure all doors and windows are fully closed and locked
βœ… Take valuables with you or place them in the trunk before you arrive at your destination
βœ… Never leave your keys or fobs inside the car, even in your own driveway

It only takes a moment to secure your ride. Stay vigilant and keep safe! πŸ”’βœ¨

πŸ’Š Keep your family safe, !

Curious kids, pets and accidental mix-ups happen, so how you store your prescriptions matters just as much as how you take them.

Secure your home with these three steps:
⬆️ Store all medications in a high location, out of the sight and reach of children and pets
πŸ”’ Consider using a locked cabinet or a medication lockbox for prescriptions, especially controlled substances
🏷️ Keep medicines in their original containers to ensure dosing instructions and expiration dates are always clear

Take a few minutes today to check your cabinets β€” a little prevention prevents a lot of heartache! πŸ πŸ’™

🐾 February is the peak breeding season for local coyotes?

During this time, you may notice more activity as they travel further to find mates and become more protective of their territory.

Help keep our neighborhood safe by following these tips:

🚫 Secure trash lids, never leave pet food outside, pick up fallen fruit and clean up birdseeds
πŸ• Keep dogs on a short leash (6 feet or less) and keep cats indoors
πŸ“’ If you see a coyote, don't run! Stand tall, wave your arms and shout.

Who to call?
πŸ“ž Call SEAACA at 562-803-3301 if the coyote is sick, injured or acting aggressively toward people
