π It is National Check Your Battery Day (March 9)! While you test your smoke detectors, make sure you handle old batteries correctly.
Most household batteries β including AA, AAA and lithium-ion β are classified as "universal waste." They contain hazardous materials, and it is prohibited by law to toss them in your regular trash or recycling bin.
Keep and your family safe with these tips:
β
Store old batteries in a dry place out of reach of children
β
Place masking tape over the terminals (the ends) to prevent sparks
β
Residential accounts (one-three units) can schedule a free e-waste curbside pick-up by calling Athens Services at (562) 259-1239 at least one day before your trash day
β
Drop off your batteries at City Hall, Paramout Sheriff's Substation, the Community Center, Spane Park, or the Coummunity Services Office.
