Valley Health System congratulates Robert Brenner, MD, MMM, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer of Valley Health System, for being named a 2026 ICON Award Honoree by NJBIZ. The ICON Award highlights trailblazers and innovators across New Jersey, according to NJBIZ.

Dr. Brenner’s career reflects a steady progression of clinical excellence, operational leadership, and system-level transformation across some of New Jersey’s most prominent healthcare organizations.

Since joining Valley in 2015 as Senior Vice President and Chief Physician Executive, he has advanced through a series of increasingly senior leadership roles, including President of Clinical Integration and the Physician Enterprise and, subsequently, President of Valley Health System.

In his current role as Valley Health System President and CEO, Dr. Brenner leads a complex organization that includes The Valley Hospital, a 370-bed tertiary care facility with approximately 32,000 annual admissions; Valley Home Care, with an average daily census of 2,000 patients; and Valley Medical Group, a large, multispecialty practice with more than 500 clinicians across over 60 specialties and approximately 65 locations, delivering more than 650,000 visits annually. Under his leadership, Valley has strengthened its core service lines – including cardiovascular care, oncology, women’s and children’s services, orthopedics, emergency care, and neurosciences – while maintaining strong affiliations with leading institutions such as the Mount Sinai Health System.

Dr. Brenner started his clinical career in private practice in Westfield, New Jersey, after serving in the United States Air Force. During his military service, he held roles as a family physician and residency faculty member. He was deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm as Chief of Emergency Medical Services in Torrejon, Spain, where he also served as a liaison to the Spanish Ministry of Health and coordinated with the Air Staging Facility.

Dr. Brenner’s leadership emphasizes patient safety, access, innovation, and physician development. He has advanced artificial intelligence initiatives, expanded outpatient infrastructure, and grown residency and fellowship programs. Beyond Valley, he serves in leadership roles with the New Jersey Hospital Association and the AMGA Foundation, contributing to healthcare strategy and policy.

His community service includes organizing care for underserved populations, leading disaster relief efforts in Haiti, and supporting public health initiatives during Ebola, H1N1, and COVID-19.

“Being named as a 2026 NJBIZ ICON is an honor, especially as Valley celebrates its 75th anniversary this year,” said Dr. Brenner. “Throughout my career, I have worked alongside exceptional colleagues, and this recognition is a testament to the collective efforts of our teams who are focused each day on advancing care and improving the health of our communities.”

In 1961, the long-anticipated East Wing of The Valley Hospital’s Phillips building opens, allowing the hospital to grow to 247 beds. The new building allows the hospital to improve and expand in every department.

In 1963, the West Wing opens in the Phillips building, accepting patients on both the first and second floors. The West Wing also becomes the new home of the successful Kurth Cottage.

Later, in 1967, the West Wing’s third and fourth floors open, along with the Coronary Care and Intensive Care Units, marking the completion of the Phillips building. The hospital’s bed capacity grows to 275.

In 1969, the dedication of the Susan Arnot Phillips and John George Phillips Wing is held in October. The Wing comprises the South, East, and West Wings of the Phillips building.

On February 19, Eric Dane, an American actor and producer most known for his role on “Grey’s Anatomy,” passed away at age 53, only 10 months after revealing his amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis.

ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord, or the brain’s connection to the muscles. Once the brain can no longer send signals to these muscles, paralysis and muscle wasting occur. The disease slowly takes away a person’s ability to walk, talk, eat, and eventually breathe.

The Valley Hospital is proud to announce that it has acquired the da Vinci 5 Surgical System, the latest generation in robotic surgical technology.

The da Vinci 5 system, by Intuitive Surgical, can be used across a spectrum of minimally invasive surgical procedures in the areas of gynecology, urology, and bariatrics, with additional applications in cardiothoracic, colorectal, and general surgery. The new system features more than 150 enhancements, all focused on accuracy, precision, and improved surgical outcomes.

Like all surgical robotic systems, the da Vinci 5 is utilized by a surgeon seated at a console near the patient in the operating room. Using the console’s viewing monitor and manual controls, the surgeon performs the surgical procedure by manually directing the system’s robotic arms. The surgeon and surgical team always remain with the patient in the operating room, just as with traditional laparoscopy.

“We are proud to have added the da Vinci 5 to Valley’s robust robotic surgery program,” said Edward Yatco, MD, Medical Director of Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery, Director of Bariatric Surgery, and Co-Chair of Valley’s Robotics Committee. “This leading-edge technology helps our surgical patients experience fewer complications, less post-operative pain, and shorter recovery times.”

“The new system allows surgeons to train in highly realistic virtual simulations before operating on patients and provides helpful insights during and after surgery to support continuous learning and improvement,” said Howard Jones, MD, Director of Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery and Co-Chair of Valley’s Robotics Committee.

Valley was among the first hospitals in the country to adopt the first da Vinci surgical system for minimally invasive surgery in 2001. Robotic surgery offers several advantages over traditional laparoscopy, including significantly less post-operative pain, reduced blood loss, less scarring, a shorter recovery time, a faster return to normal daily activities, and, in many cases, better clinical outcomes.

For more information on Valley’s Institute of Robotic Surgery, please call 201-447-8012.
