The Valley Hospital is proud to announce it has received the SCOPY “Staying Strong & Scoping On” Award by the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG). This award recognizes excellence in colorectal cancer outreach and prevention.

This award was presented during the ACG 2025 Annual Meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. During this meeting, the team also presented four research posters highlighting Valley’s focus on furthering gastroenterology care.

ACG’s SCOPY – “Service Award for Colorectal Cancer Outreach” – recognizes the achievements of ACG members in their community engagement, education, and awareness efforts for colorectal cancer prevention. ACG members submit examples of projects and programs to be considered for the award.

Throughout February and March of 2025, Valley held several events to promote awareness and further education of colorectal cancer. This included tabling events at local grocery stores, middle schools, malls, and The Valley Hospital, as well as presentations to high school students. The project, titled “Prevent Young, Protecting Lifelong: Educating Younger Populations on the Importance of Colorectal Cancer Screening,” focused on the younger population due to the increased risk of colorectal cancer among younger individuals.

The Valley Hospital offers a Fast-Track Screening Colonoscopy program, where eligible patients can schedule a colonoscopy without having a pre-procedural visit with a gastroenterologist. Patients are screened over the phone by an advanced practice provider (APP) to ensure they are eligible for the program. If deemed eligible, the APP matches the patients up with a physician based on an insurance match, availability, and the patient’s personal preference. Since its inception in 2018, the Valley’s Fast Track Screening Colonoscopy program has proudly screened more than 1,800 patients.

Colorectal cancer outreach at Valley Health System is led by Antoneta Lamo, PA-C, physician assistant navigator for the Fast-Track Screening Colonoscopy program. Antoneta, along with key services at Valley, including Community Health and endoscopy, plays a vital role in delivering essential education and resources to the community. Their collective efforts are instrumental in promoting the early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer and in making preventive screenings more accessible to those who need them.

At Valley, we are proud to honor and care for those who have served our country. Our Veteran Program recognizes patients who are Veterans and offers them the opportunity to connect with a friendly visitor who provides companionship, conversation, and appreciation for their service.

Recently, we were proud to be joined by Bergen County Veterans Services as we unveiled this new initiative at The Valley Hospital. We honored Dennis for his service — and all Veterans who come to Valley.

Through this program, Valley is committed to ensuring that our veteran patients feel seen, valued, and supported — not only for their health needs, but for their lasting contributions to our community and our nation.

Congratulations to Patricia (Trish) M. Jimenez, Community Health Nurse, Valley Hospice, Valley Home Care’s DAISY Award winner for the second quarter, presented by The DAISY Foundation.

An excerpt from Trish's nomination reads:

“Trish is an amazing hospice nurse. When I called Valley to put my mother on hospice, Trish was there the very next day, called me personally, and arranged to meet to discuss and review my mother’s wishes and my goals or expectations for the care that she could provide.

“She listened carefully and offered suggestions on an approach to meeting our goals while assuring that mom would be as comfortable as possible.

“She checked in frequently and demonstrated overwhelming kindness, caring, and compassion for me and my mom.

“On the morning that Mom passed, she personally called me and waited by her bedside for me to arrive.

“Making the decision to put Mom on hospice was a tough one, but a nurse like Trish clearly demonstrated that the right decision was made.

“She explained everything extremely well and made herself available whenever needed to answer any questions or provide additional explanation about the care she directed for mom.

“Extraordinary care, compassion, and professionalism describe Trish completely. I hope that she receives the DAISY recognition. I cannot think of anyone [else] who brings the program’s goals to life."

Valley Health System is proud to support New Concepts for Living (NCFL) through the donation of 30 medical beds that will enhance the comfort and care of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The donated beds are being used in NCFL’s medically supportive community residences. These homes are designed for individuals who desire a home-like environment while requiring 24-hour on-site nursing care. Members of the Valley team were honored to attend the ribbon cutting and open house for NCFL’s newest medically supportive residence for adults with I/DD in Mahwah, New Jersey. This new home will include six of the medical beds generously donated by Valley Health System.

The Valley Hospital is proud to announce that it has received reaccreditation from the American College of Surgeons (ACS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) Accreditation Program. The ACS CoC is a consortium of professional organizations focused on improving survival and quality of life for patients with cancer by setting and elevating standards. This honor reflects Valley's continued commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centered cancer care.

This accreditation is awarded to institutions that meet more than 30 rigorous quality standards across the continuum of cancer services. It affirms Valley’s dedication to providing comprehensive, patient-centered care through multidisciplinary collaboration, evidence-based practices, and continuous quality improvement. To maintain accreditation, cancer programs must undergo a site visit every three years. The CoC accreditation standards supply the structure for providing all patients with a full range of diagnostic, treatment, and supportive services either on-site or by referral, including community-based resources.

“This accreditation is a testament to the dedication of our cancer care team,” said Ephraim Casper, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Valley-Mount Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Care and Chair of Oncology Services for Valley Medical Group. “Meeting these rigorous standards shows our commitment to delivering the highest quality of comprehensive and patient-centered care. We are proud to offer advanced cancer services close to home that meet our patients’ needs.”
