🚨 When UnitedHealthcare says no to IVIG for PANS/PANDAS….Families Fight Back!

Repost:

Emily’s parents, Justin and refused to accept “no” when their daughter’s IVIG treatment for PANS/PANDAS was denied by UnitedHealthcare.

Months of appeals, expert-backed evidence, and relentless advocacy—including help from , an AI-driven platform—finally led to approval just before Christmas. 👏🏻

But the delays took a toll. This fight shouldn’t be necessary. Families shouldn’t have to battle insurers for doctor-prescribed care.

NJ Assembly Bill (A3246) and Senate Bill 598 (S598) to require insurance coverage for the diagnosis and treatment of PANS and PANDAS are pending in the Assembly Financial Institutions and Insurance (AFI) Committee and the Senate Commerce Committee, respectively.

Thank you to & for exposing this reality. Change is overdue.

Maddy’s Story💕 👧🏼 🧠🔥 via .foundation

At just 8 years old, Maddy was misdiagnosed with OCD, anxiety, and an eating disorder.

After a strep infection, followed by a sinus infection, her symptoms gradually escalated — OCD, anxiety, school refusal, and restricted eating driven by fear of choking. An anti-anxiety medication only made things worse.

A school nurse suggested PANDAS. Her parents found a PANS/PANDAS specialist. And everything changed.

Today, at age 9, Maddy is 80% back to baseline, back in school, eating normally, and continuing treatment — on a clear path toward full recovery.

✨ Healing is possible.

Bills S598 and A3246 would require insurance coverage for diagnosis and prescribed treatment of PANS and PANDAS in New Jersey and would provide MUCH needed relief to affected New Jersey children, young adults and their families.

For decades, families affected by PANS/PANDAS have said the same thing:
Something happened after strep.

Now, National Geographic is highlighting new research showing how strep infections can disrupt immune signaling and, in some cases, trigger autoimmune reactions that affect the brain.

The article explains that Group A Streptococcus can trigger immune responses that do not always resolve when the sore throat goes away (and we know one doesn’t even need acute signs of infection). Sometimes, through a process called molecular mimicry, the immune system can become confused and start attacking healthy tissue, including parts of the nervous system.

The article specifically mentions PANDAS as a post-streptococcal autoimmune condition marked by the onset of OCD, tics, or both.

Science is starting to confirm what many families have known for years.
As we learn more about how infections affect the immune system and the brain, we have a better chance of recognizing these problems early and treating them properly.

When we understand how infections can affect both immune and brain health, we get closer to preventing years of misdiagnosis, wrong psychiatric placements, and needless suffering.

The conversation is changing, and that is a sign of progress.

This is what hope looks like. 🧡

At age 4, everything changed.
OCD. Separation anxiety. School refusal. Rage.

He was labeled with OCD, anxiety, and ADHD at age 5.
But his parents knew something wasn’t right.

After a long history of strep and ear infections, they asked questions. They pushed. They requested a throat swab and strep titers. The pediatrician listened.

Positive swab. Extremely elevated titers.
Proper diagnosis: PANDAS.

Today:
70% back to baseline.
Back in school.
Continuing to improve.
On the path to full recovery. 🧡

This is why listening to caregivers matters.
This is why stigma around mental health symptoms is dangerous.
When psychiatric symptoms are automatically labeled behavioral or primary mental illness, children can be missed.

Caregivers often have to fight for testing, referrals, and recognition. Access to diagnosis and treatment should not depend on how loudly a parent can advocate.

Mental health symptoms can have medical causes.
Infection-triggered neuroinflammation is real.
Healing is possible when we Look. for root causes. 🧡

Thank you Senator Bramnick for co-sponsoring Bill S598! You heard our stories and joined our village with such enthusiasm! 💪🏻 🏛️📜🖋️🙏🏻

Families across New Jersey are deeply grateful for your leadership and support as we work to make essential insurance coverage for the diagnosis and treatment for PANS/PANDAS a reality. 🩺 🙏🏻

🚨Did you know that what can look like a mental health crisis might actually be a medical one‼️?

Anxiety, OCD, rage, school refusal, depression, tics, food restriction and more—can be triggered by infection and inflammation.
It’s called PANS/PANDAS 🧠🔥 and it’s a form of autoimmune encephalitis.

Children and young adults can heal with early diagnosis and treatment, but inaccessibility to proper diagnosis and available treatments have created a crisis situation for affected NJ children and their families.🚨

“A rare condition can send kids into fits of rage. Treatment could help — if insurance covers it.”
By Olivia Gieger
VTDigger | February 13, 2026

The article follows Vermont families navigating sudden onset neuropsychiatric symptoms, the search for answers, and the barriers many encounter when physicians recommend immune-directed treatments such as IVIG.

For some children, treatment targeting the immune system has helped reduce severe symptoms. For others, insurance denials leave families stuck in appeals while children continue to struggle.

The story also explores the broader debate in medicine, the evolving science around PANS and PANDAS, and legislative efforts to address insurance coverage for medically necessary treatment.
