Communication: Listen to Understand

Most of us listen to respond, not to understand.

A helpful shift is to practice reflective listening. When someone shares, repeat back: “What I hear you saying is…” This doesn’t mean you agree, but it shows you’re listening.

Try introducing family check-ins: once a week, each person shares one thing they’re grateful for and one thing they’re struggling with. This models openness and teaches kids (and adults!) that feelings are okay.

The clothing room quarter sale is scheduled for September 18, 20, and 25.

The Clothing Room at First Christian Church of Paris, KY is open Thursdays 8:30-11:30 and the third Saturday of each month from 9-11. Located in the church basement, entrance is through the glass double doors by the mailbox. We offer clothing for all ages, including men's, women's, and children's options, as well as some household items.

OCD often brings disturbing or unwanted thoughts.

Here’s a reminder: a thought is just a thought.

Having it doesn’t mean it’s true, and it doesn’t define you. Instead of fighting the thought, try labeling it: “This is an intrusive thought.” Then gently shift your focus to a grounding activity like deep breathing, stretching, or naming things you’re grateful for.

In counseling, we use proven methods like CBT to help reduce the power of obsessions and compulsions. You don’t have to live captive to your thoughts—freedom is possible. 🌟
