Direct Primary Care provides healthcare by taking the administrators and insurance out of your healthcare. It allows us to work directly with you as a patient and form a relationship where we- the doctor, the patient, sometimes the family- all work together. DPC does not 'nickel and dime' you for every little thing outside of your 5- minute appointment with most 'providers'. One monthly fee provides in-office testing, 30-minute appointments with a physician, EKGs, counseling on weight, exercise, living healthy, chronic conditions, my cell phone number for emergencies, etc, etc. Things that you pay separately for. We try to not send you to specialists for conditions that can be treated by us. And we offer low cost medications and low cost labs for our members. An example? A cholesterol test at our office is $9. If you use insurance for that same test it is $178 until you've met your deductible which takes a long time to meet. Our goal is to provide quality healthcare in a relationship and prevent illness and disease without meeting your deductible. So go to the website and check us out and start living a healthy life.

Heart Health Month: New information comes out very often about the importance of knowing cholesterol levels and how to stay healthy. Monitoring is an important part of trying to prevent heart disease. We now have info on apolipoprotein B and the importance of prevention and just knowing if you are at risk. Having high cholesterol does not mean medication immediately. There are lots of factors about your individual heart history that play a part and be aware that there are risks to taking any medication. Take time to make prevention a part of your routine so medication is the only choice. But most importantly, take time to make an appointment with your family physician to discuss your numbers.

Seems like milk and dairy has become a very popular topic lately. As the niece and granddaughter of dairy farmers, it has often been a topic of conversation for as long as I can remember. So, it isn't just recently that the importance of milk and dairy has been known. Did you know that having 3 servings of dairy a day actually increases weight loss? That milk is one of the best electrolyte replacement drinks on the market? And no dyes! A lot of concentration is being placed on our gut biomes, the bacteria in our digestive system. Yogurt helps keep your intestines supplied with healthy bacteria and has even been linked to preventing colon cancer. And milk/yogurt is a lot less expensive than special tablets, drinks, powders etc promising to restore our gut biome. Probiotics are great but adding yogurt to the mix is greater! Yes, ice cream is dairy and counts- just in moderation to avoid extra calories or saturated fat. We've made great leaps for those who have problems with lactose with a variety of products that allow benefits of good ol' milk. Mooove to add more dairy to your diets.

Happy Valentine's Month! It's the start of Heart Health Month in February. Does this heart look like the typical heart? No because the heart is a very complex organ that supplies blood and oxygen to every cell in the entire body and allows it to function. Several posts this month will be about heart issues and knowing your numbers to help keep your heart, and thus You, healthy. First up is Blood Pressure. There is some controversy about blood pressure numbers and it's important to follow your physician's guidance with how you feel at certain levels and other medical conditions you may have. Home readings may be more accurate than those taken intermittently in a doctor's office. The top number is the systolic pressure and is the pressure when the heart is contracting and pushing blood out. The range of systolic pressure is between 100 to 139 but varies from moment to moment, time of day, activities, etc. The diastolic pressure or bottom number is the blood pressure when the heart is relaxing and taking in blood to pump out with the next systole. The range for most is between 60 to 89. Do be aware that some physicians want to keep those pressures between 100-130/ 60-80. Ask your family doc for lifestyle changes you can make simply to help control this important heart healthy number.

Wellness and Longevity require a long-term investment in lots of different areas. But there is a really important interaction and connection between mental health and physical health. It's easy to see the effects of physical health: feeling good generally makes us feel lifted up and like we can conquer the world. When we feel down or blue, physical exercise actually increases the happy neurotransmitters in our brains and makes things a little brighter. Likewise, feeling good and happy mentally gives us an energy boost to actually do physical exercise. Being around others also prevents problems with mental health. Studies have proven that married couples or those in long term stable relationships actually live longer! And unfortunately, studies show an increase in blood pressures and heart disease as well as sugar levels in those with mental health issues. Be aware of how you can improve by being around others in healthy relationships. That's what gives meaning to life. Ask your doc about how to be a happier, and healthier, person.

Having a good quality of life is the ultimate goal for all of us. We need to be healthy, eat healthy, exercise healthy but more importantly, not be miserable in reaching those goals. Moderation is a word that carries a lot of weight- will you shorten your life if you eat a slice of cake on your birthday? No, have the slice of cake but don't eat the whole cake. Like the taste or texture of whole milk? Use whole milk but don't eat fatty cuts of pork and beef. Missed a day of exercise/ walking? You will survive, try to fit in some walking at home or if you can't get to the gym, lift some canned goods! Did you know 180 pennies in a sock makes a 1 pound ankle weight? Do stretches if you miss a class. DANCE!! Even 15 minutes of dancing has been proven to have a similar effect to a SSRI anti-depressant. So think about moderation and give yourself some grace and have a great life!

Sometimes salt is a good thing, like salting driveways and roads to get rid of ice and snow. When it works and the conditions are right: above a certain temperature, not raining when applied, etc. Same for salt in our bodies- there are conditions where the body has a higher sodium need or even needs salt tablets to keep their blood pressure up. But for most of us, we get too much salt in foods let alone the salt we add ourselves. And a new study that came out confirms the detrimental effects of too much salt in our diets. Just be aware of your body's needs and what you put in it. "two new studies published in Hypertension suggest that “reducing the sodium in pre-packaged and prepared foods may prevent thousands of cases of heart disease.” For the first study, researchers in France used national diet and health data to estimate “that modest decreases in bread salt content could cut adults’ daily salt intake by 0.35 grams, lower their blood pressure and prevent more than 1,100 deaths.” For the second study, “researchers from the U.K. estimated that similar salt reductions in packaged foods and takeout meals could lower daily British sodium intake by 17.5%, preventing more than 100,000 cases of heart disease and 25,000 cases of stroke over 20 years.”

Guess what?! Milk is real food. Whole milk is from a real cow, 2% milk is from a real cow and even skim milk is from a real cow! Wow! But the 2% milk and skim milk may be a bit healthier for most people as they have less saturated fat. They still have milk proteins and all the calcium and Vitamin D of whole milk. None of the nutrients are removed with pasteurization of 'raw milk'- only the bacteria that can make us sick and even cause miscarriages. Moderation is a good concept to learn about - want to enjoy whole milk? Great, just watch saturated fat intake from other sources when you do that. Real butter? Great- use a pat on whole grain bread but maybe limit your protein intake to lean beef, chicken or fish proteins the rest of the day. Use common sense in our diets.

There are lots of confusing thoughts on how to eat healthy from lots of different sources, not all of them scientifically vetted. The MyPlate is what we have used for over a decade to encourage healthy eating and diets and to help simply aid people in eating a proper diet. Then there are micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals and other supplemental enzymes our body uses. incorporates all the latest information without having to see different providers for weight management, dietitians, exercise specialists, and procedures. also affords the extra time to talk about all this information and how to incorporate it in Your lifestyle. Let's talk about healthy concepts over the next few weeks and how we can get to a better place.
