Happy National Children's Dental Health Month! 🦷 Tooth decay is the most common preventable chronic disease in children.

Luckily, cavities and the bacteria that cause them can be kept at bay with a few simple habits you can do at home. Here are 3 tips for healthy smiles:

1. Visit a dentist by age 1 or within 6 months of their first tooth erupting 👶

2. Limit sugary snacks and drinks and encourage drinking water throughout the day 💧

3. Clean gums daily, brush as soon as the first tooth appears, and use fluoridated toothpaste to help prevent cavities 🪥

Influenza has hit Utah hard this season, but it's not too late to get a flu shot! In fact, it's possible to get sick from different flu strains within the same season, and it's hard to predict when the flu season will end each year. Babies & kids under 4 are at the highest risk for getting infected with influenza.

We recommend flu shots for children 6 months and older. Some children will need 2 doses of the flu shot, especially if it's their first time being vaccinated against the flu.

Call us today to schedule!

Here's what you need to know about over-the-counter (OTC) cough & cold medications for kids:

1. OTC cough & cold medicines should NOT be given to kids under 4 years old due to the risk of dangerous side effects.

2. Studies show that cough & cold medications that are taken by mouth don't work in children younger than 6 years old. Phenylephedrine, commonly used in OTC nasal decongestants, doesn't work any better than a placebo (fake medicine).

3. Many cold medicines already have acetaminophen (Tylenol) in them. If you give one of these medicines along with acetaminophen (Tylenol), your child will get a double dose.

So what's the best way to treat your child's cold? . Link in bio for tips.

Hi, Melody the Dietitian here! One of the questions I get asked the most as a pediatric dietitian is, "Should my child take a multivitamin?" To help figure out the answer, first ask yourself, “Does my child eat the recommended 1-2 cups per day of fruit and 2-3 cups per day of vegetables?” If the answer is “no” (which is the case for most Americans), then adding a multivitamin is a good idea!

Here's why:

It can be hard to know if your child is eating enough nutrients - especially for kids who are picky eaters or on restricted diets. A multivitamin can help fill those gaps. Be sure to talk to your pediatric dietitian or ask your pediatrician!

Swipe for steps to help you pick the right multivitamin for your child.

Hi, it's Cassi, registered nurse and Child Passenger Safety Technician with a quick winter car seat tip! ❄️

Bulky winter coats & clothing can make a car seats unsafe. With bulky clothing, the harness straps can’t tighten properly and leave extra space between your child and the straps. The bulky material can compress in a crash, leaving the harness too loose to properly hold your child in the car seat and protect them.

Here are some tips to keep your child warm AND safe:

🧥 Remove bulky coats & winter clothing BEFORE buckling
🔒 Buckle and tighten the harness snugly
🧣 Add warmth AFTER buckling - a blanket or coat placed on backwards over the straps works great!

Even if a thin jacket or sweater makes the straps too loose when removed, it's too thick for the car seat and should be removed in the car seat.

Let’s keep our kids safe and warm on the roads this winter!

is important to help protect your baby while they sleep. Here are 4 things that can prevent accidental suffocation:

1. Always place your baby on their back to sleep - every nap and at bedtime.

- This prevents their airway from becoming blocked, even if they have reflux and spit up. Your baby's reflexes prevent them from choking, but only when they're on their back.

2. Don't bed share - place your baby in a bassinet or crib near your bed for the first 6 months. Your pillows and blankets are hazards for your little one - you can accidentally suffocate your baby if you roll on top of them because you're tired.

3. Put your baby on a firm, flat sleep surface.

- Babies can easily sink or slump on a soft or inclined surfaces and accidentally suffocate. If your baby falls asleep in a car seat, move them to a crib or bassinet when you get home, or monitor their breathing if they must stay in the car seat.

4. Remove everything from your baby's crib.

- Soft bedding like pillows and blankets, as well as other items like bumpers or stuffed animals, can block your baby's face, strangle, or suffocate them.
