It is that time of year to be mindful of those suffering Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This condition throws off our internal biochemistry. Approximately, 10 million adults in the U.S. experience SAD; women are four times likely to be impacted than men (particularly if the woman is perimenopausal). Unfortunately, people either don't know that they are suffering from this, so shedding more light on to what is being considered a mental health concern is of the utmost importance; especially if a person already has a history of depression.
It is early enough in the season to be proactive/preventative, so some ways to push back against SAD include but are not limited to: watching your diet, nurturing your gut biome, taking a proper vitamin D supplement (do the chemistry research to find out how to make the Vitamin D more bioavailable), exercise and light therapy. Taken directly from a NPR article:
A lot of research has shown that using bright light therapy in the morning can be extremely helpful to reverse some of the symptoms of seasonal depression," says Dr. Dorothy Sit, a psychiatrist and associate professor at Northwestern University, who has studied bright light therapy.
Typically, people sit in front of a light box, which emits bright light, every morning for about 30 minutes, give or take. Sit says making it part of a morning routine is key. "If people use a light box every day they can experience an enduring effect throughout the fall and winter," she says.
Sit points to an often-cited study that found light therapy is on par with standard anti-depression medications in relieving symptoms. Some people do both, taking medication and using a light box, and research shows the combination can be helpful. Studies point to improvements in symptoms within one week of starting light therapy.

These light boxes can be found at most retailers. Studies say to find one that emits at least 10,000 lux and UV protection. As always, DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH. THIS POST IS INFORMATIVE ONLY AND NOT INTENDED TO DIAGNOSE OR TREAT.
