Great workout session today at my Silver Foxes, Grey Wolves Senior Fitness Class today! I decided to integrate Battle Ropes for the first time and they were more than up for the challenge.

No matter what your age, trying new things and challenging yourself should be embraced, not avoided.

What's better than performing Weighted Walking Lunges? Performing Weighted Walking Lunges in an empty pool, of course! (Actually I did them there because I thought it was a strange location). 😁

Because the Weighted Walking Lunges is a compound exercises that involves several different muscles - glutes, calves, quads, core, hamstrings, and forearms (grip strength), they require a lot of 'full-body effort, which means your metabolism will kick into fifth gear, you'll get your heart racing, and you’ll burn a lot of calories.

Not only do Weighted Walking Lunges combine conditioning and strength, they're excellent for improving cardiovascular health and reducing your risk of heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke.

Try 'em next leg day, even if you don't have access to a fully-drained pool!

One of the greatest joys that comes with providing physical therapy services is helping folks return to doing the things they enjoy most. Another is the ability to utilize creative methods to help them get there.

While basketball isn't a direct medical therapy for stroke recovery, the physical and cognitive skills involved can significantly benefit stroke recovery by promoting neuroplasticity (the brain's ability to rewire itself) through activities that improve coordination, balance, strength, and cognitive functions.

Two things I enjoy most about working with youngsters in my FitKidz Youth Fitness Program:
1) Their willingness to be challenged and naturally competitive nature, and
2) The opportunity I have to be creative and make fitness...fun.

This six-part fitness course challenge requires each athlete to run the width of the gym carrying a 10lb. medicine ball, dive five times through a giant octagon, cross the width of the gym on a scooter board, run across the gym floor at full speed and clear two hurdles, complete ten step board jumps, leap diagonally into the center ten rings, and cross the finish line in the shortest amount of time possible.

I call it the Vanguard "Sleep Good Tonight Course."

One of the modalities of physical therapy I enjoy most is Vestibular Therapy. Also known as Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT), is a specialized form of therapy designed to alleviate problems caused by vestibular (balance) disorders, like vertigo, dizziness, and balance issues.

In this video, I'm working with Guy, a great patient to have whose balance has been negatively impacted by a chronic illness. When he first came to me, simply standing in place without swaying was a significant challenge for him. Now his efforts are paying off as he can now balance on a BOSU for over 10 seconds.

Despite the torrential downpours here in Chicago Tuesday afternoon, the experience I had recording a health & wellness segment at the studios of CAN-TV was bright & sunny!

Our Host, Mr. Art Sims, Guest House Community Outreach Manager, along with Mrs. Melanie Hall, LCPC, and myself, recorded an in-depth discussion on the importance of recognizing and establishing practical self-awareness habits for patients and caregivers.

CONFESSION SUNDAY:
I've NEVER met anyone who has not faced some sort of health, fitness, or wellness challenge in their lifetime and I'm no exception.

My challenge - getting consistent & adequate sleep. It takes me forever to wind down, calm my thoughts, get the adrenaline to settle, decompress, and prepare my body for rest. Because of my schedule, It's not uncommon for me to function on four hours of sleep and that ain't good. Eventually, such poor sleep habits will catch up to me and that is not anything I want to happen.

To avoid looking like Sleepy Tom, I needed to reacquaint myself with the negative effects of sleep deprivation and the simple strategies I can utilize to reduce my risks. If you can use a bedtime tune-up, feel free to save, share, and/or print the graphic I created and use it as your guide to better rest.
