The truth is, cancer is hard, and the cold winter days don’t make it any easier. You are not alone, and communicating openly about the emotional toll of cancer does not make anyone any less of a survivor. Reach out to those around you. Share your feelings and find strength with each other. The community of support around you is ready to help and listen.

Here are some additional strategies to cope with seasonal mood changes:

πŸ’œ Consider joining online and over-the-phone communities like the PanCAN Smart Patients Community or PanCAN’s Survivor and Caregiver Network, where you can build connections with people going through similar experiences.
β˜€οΈ For seasonal affective disorder (SAD), you can also try to get more natural light by sitting outside for a short time; bundled up of course! Doctors may also recommend light therapy, which uses a type of lightbox to mimic natural light.
πŸ§˜β€β™€οΈ Gentle exercise may help to boost mood and make you feel more energized.
πŸ’¬ Professional therapy may be the right option for some patients. Some providers work specifically with patients facing cancer. PanCAN Patient Services can help point you in the right direction.

When you get your blood drawn at a doctor’s office or lab, you often receive complete blood count, or CBC, results. CBC tests check for several levels within your body that can indicate when something isn’t right. 🩸

For example, high white blood cell counts can signify that your body is fighting off an infection. When levels are too low, they could indicate a weakened or compromised immune system. Chemotherapy and other cancer treatments can impact patients’ white blood counts.

CBC tests also provide information about your red blood cells, which function to carry oxygen throughout your body. When red blood cell counts drop too low, it causes a condition called anemia.

Chronic diseases like pancreatic cancer, or inflammation like pancreatitis, can cause anemia. And chemotherapy or radiation therapy can also cause or worsen anemia.

If you or a loved one is experiencing new or worsening fatigue or muscle weakness, these could be symptoms of anemia.

This World Anemia Awareness Day, learn more about anemia and pancreatic cancer at πŸ”— https://pancan.org/news/friday-fix-anemia-and-pancreatic-cancer/.
