Parents and children beware! Nerf gun injuries are serious. The impact to the eye causes more than just outward bruising. These images show the inflammatory response in the anterior chamber and bleeding and bruising that happen in the retina. Even though you may feel silly, always wear eye protection during nerf gun play. šŸ¤“

This poor 12 year old had been treated for pink eye. He was using the prescribed drops as directed by his P*P but wasn’t improving. By the time I saw him he had blood vessel growth onto his cornea. Thankfully with a change in medication this will resolve! If you think you have pink eye it’s always a good idea to have an eye doctor look! We have a special instrument called a slit lamp that magnifies the eye and allows us to see what is going on.

Did you know not all ā€œpink eyesā€ are bacterial? When a kiddo or adult has a pink or red eye- it could be many things! Using the instrument pictured here called a slit lamp, we are able to view the eye in 25x magnification, allowing us to determine what is causing your irritated eye. This little boy had been on an antibiotic when he really needed a different treatment. Never hesitate to reach out to your optometrist when your eyes are red or pink. Thankfully he is feeling brand new!

Kids in glasses… šŸ˜. It’s a new year, and maybe it’s time for you to do a check in on your child’s vision! Through dilation and a process called retinoscopy, eye doctors can tell if your little one has a glasses prescription. Most young kiddos won’t be able to tell you they can’t see, they just think it’s normal vision.

A lot of people have heard of glaucoma, but aren’t quite sure what it means. Here is a picture from a recent patient, that helps me explain what occurs in a someone who has glaucoma, but is not having yearly eye exams. On the left side of this picture is a healthy optic nerve. The optic nerve is the cable that connects your eye to your brain. On the right side is an optic nerve that has severe damage. How do we know?

If you look closely you can see that if we think of an optic nerve as a donut šŸ© the left optic nerve has a little ā€œdonut holeā€ and lots of healthy ā€œdonutā€ tissue surrounding it. The right optic nerve is almost only ā€œdonut holeā€ and no ā€œdonutā€ tissue. These changes occur with NO PAIN! In fact most people have no idea they have glaucoma until they have an annual eye exam, or they have peripheral vision loss. All this to say, eye exams are not just for glasses! Get your eye health checked even if you ā€œfeel fineā€!
