What is PROM (and why does it matter after surgery)?

Passive Range of Motion = movement created without your muscles actively contracting.

After many surgeries — ACL, meniscus repair, total joint replacement, rotator cuff, ankle stabilization, and more — early motion is critical (based on your specific protocol).
✔️ Restores joint mobility
✔️ Reduces scar tissue formation
✔️ Maintains capsular flexibility
✔️ Controls swelling
✔️ Protects long-term function

It can be uncomfortable.
It can feel discouraging.
Some days it feels like you’re losing.

But in many post-op protocols, this phase determines how smooth (or difficult) the rest of rehab becomes.

🚨 What happens if PROM is neglected?
When passive motion is delayed or avoided beyond what your protocol allows, the effects can snowball:
• Joint stiffness that becomes harder to reverse
• Excess scar tissue (arthrofibrosis)
• Muscle inhibition and delayed strength gains
• Compensatory movement patterns
• Longer rehab timelines
• Plateaued outcomes despite hard work later

As time progresses, it becomes more difficult to regain motion that wasn’t addressed early and strength alone won’t fix mobility restrictions.
You can’t out-strength a stiff joint.
Mobility within protocol → then stability → then strength.

PROM isn’t about being aggressive.
It’s about respecting your surgical protocol and staying consistent.

Too little = lost motion.
Too much = irritation.
The sweet spot is guided progression.

🚨 BFR Training: The Game-Changer at 3 Months Post-ACL Surgery 🚨
