🌷 Spring Refresh at Decatur County EMS 🚑✨

With the arrival of warmer weather, our crews have been taking full advantage of the sunshine to do a little spring cleaning around our stations and ambulances!

From deep cleaning our trucks to freshening up our building and even repainting our guide stripes, this warm weather has given us the opportunity to come together as a team and take pride in the place we call our home away from home.

These moments go beyond just cleaning — they reflect the dedication, teamwork, and ownership our crews have in serving Decatur County. When we take care of our equipment and our environment, we’re better prepared to take care of our community.

We are proud of the space we work in, the trucks we respond in, and most importantly, the team that makes it all happen every single day. 💙

The Voices That Never Stopped Answering

While crews were navigating ice-covered roads, downed trees, and dangerous conditions, there was another group working tirelessly behind the scenes — our dispatchers.

During this weather event, they took every single call. Every emergency. Every request for help. Every moment of uncertainty from our community. And they did it while coordinating multiple departments at once, managing limited resources, and making critical decisions — flawlessly.

We cannot begin to imagine how mentally and emotionally taxed they were.

Dispatchers had to:
•Prioritize life-threatening calls in real time
•Delegate responses across EMS, fire, law enforcement, rescue, and TDOT, electric companies, water companies, and so many more
•Track units, road conditions, and changing hazards
•Remain calm, composed, and reassuring on the phone — no matter how overwhelming the situation
•They were the calm in the chaos.
•The steady voice on the other end of the line.
•The lifeline connecting every department together.

These professionals don’t get to step away from the phones. They don’t get the relief of movement. They carry the weight of every call — and still show up ready for the next one.

To our dispatchers: thank you for your endurance, your precision, and your unwavering dedication to this community. The work you did during this storm did not go unnoticed — and could not have been done without you.

You are essential.
You are respected.
And we are incredibly grateful.

An Essential Service.
An Unmatched Sacrifice.
Our Unsung Heroes.

There are moments that remind us just how fortunate our community is — and this weather event was one of them.

Decatur County Rescue Squad is a 100% volunteer organization that relies entirely on donations, and during this severe weather they proved — beyond any doubt — just how essential they are to our county.

Throughout the storm, they assisted EMS on every single ambulance call. They didn’t just help — they walked every step with us.

They:
•Cleared paths through ice and debris so EMS could reach patients
•Loaded patients into their own vehicles and transported them to waiting ambulances
•Took EMS personnel to patients when roads were impassable
•Carried EMS equipment and supplies through hazardous conditions
•Stayed with crews from start to finish, never once backing away

Many members used their own vehicles, their own fuel, and risked their own safety — all without any monetary compensation — simply because it needed to be done.

Beyond EMS support, Decatur County Rescue Squad worked around the clock:

•Rescuing residents from their homes
•Transporting individuals to warming centers
•Returning them home once power was restored
•Delivering water and food to those in need and often, this was done in their personal vehicles, using their own gas, during a time when fuel access was extremely limited.

Every department in this county leaned on the Decatur County Rescue Squad during this event. Quite simply — our county would not function the same without them.

They are not optional.
They are not secondary.
They are an ESSENTIAL asset to Decatur County and its people.

Please consider supporting this incredible service by donating at their next benefit or whenever the opportunity arises. Our community is safer because of them — and we cannot afford to take that for granted.
From all of us — thank you, Decatur County Rescue Squad.
Your sacrifice, dedication, and heart do not go unnoticed. ❤️🚑

The last several days have been some of the most challenging we’ve faced.

Ice-covered roads, downed trees, blocked access, long response times, and crews pushing through exhaustion — all while still answering the call for our community.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who stepped up and worked tirelessly to help get EMS units back on the road and keep our crews safe.

From clearing roadways and fallen trees, assisting with access, managing traffic hazards, and working alongside EMS in extremely dangerous conditions — your dedication did not go unnoticed. This was true teamwork in every sense of the word.

Also, a very special thank you to Mi Pueblito for feeding our EMS crews free of charge, on that particular day, it was the only meal and food source we had that day. That act of kindness meant more than words can say during long, cold, exhausting shifts. You helped keep our crews fueled, warm, and reminded them they are supported by this community.

To our EMS crews — thank you for your resilience, your sacrifice, and your unwavering commitment to serve, even when conditions are at their worst.
This is what community looks like.
This is what teamwork looks like.
And we are incredibly grateful. ❤️🚑

🚑❄️ COLD WEATHER SAFETY REMINDER ❄️🚑

With cold temperatures impacting our area, Ambulance Services of Lexington wants to remind everyone that cold-related emergencies can escalate quickly—and knowing what to look for can save lives.

🆘 Call 911 immediately if someone:
• Becomes confused or is difficult to wake
• Has chest pain or trouble breathing
• Stops shivering
• Does not respond when spoken to or touched

⏱️ Time is critical. Hypothermia and frostbite can become life-threatening faster than many people realize. If you’re unsure, it’s always better to call for help.

🧤 While waiting for emergency responders:
• Move the person indoors or to a warm, sheltered area
• Remove wet clothing and replace with dry, warm layers
• Cover with blankets or coats to help retain body heat
• Give warm, alcohol-free fluids if the person is awake and able to swallow

Please check on elderly neighbors, family members, and anyone without adequate heat or shelter. A simple check-in can make a big difference.
