An interesting concept posits that connection is the opposite of addiction. Within the surmounting destruction and progressive demise, there is a corresponding escalation of disconnecting from others, from society, from life, from meaning, and from god. Originating from self.
In these times of disconnection, remaining connected is literally vital (latin for necessary or essential for ‘vita’, life). Finding opportunities to have meaningful connection with others, with purpose and meaning, can help maintain wellness within, and stave off dis-order and dis-ease.
For anyone in recovery, especially early on, isolation and disconnection is dangerous and fatal (sadly, sometimes literally as well as figuratively). Finding connection and community will provide the needed haven to sustain yourself. Utilizing the online resources and harnessing the power of the phone are necessary.
For anyone experiencing the effects of this mental and physical siege, finding opportunities to connect with others in a meaningful (and safe) way can maintain balance. We may not have not the luxury of filling our reserves with presence and engagement, but there are always ways to experience the replenishing interactions of others. Have individuals that understand, that will make time and space for your process.
The healing power of therapy is connection. The healing process within recovery takes place within community. The two process can be infinitely synergistic. But nothing will ever substitute for one human being present for another, attuned and open. This dynamic simply cannot be replicated or synthesized.
Why not reach out and practice connecting, interacting, and being vulnerable, in a deeper manner? The risks are great, but the reward is worth it.
