As the co-owner of 4
California smaller 6-person board & care homes, I can tell you first hand that board & care homes are a GREAT alternative to larger memory care communities that can charge twice the monthly fee that a board & care home charges. A larger memory care community corporation in California charges 3 times the monthly rental fee as their community fee. So for a $15,000 studio in their memory care, a family should be prepared to shell out $60,000 for the first month and community fee. Whereas with no community fee and half that $15,000 at $7,500 for a better ratio of caregiver to resident, board and care homes should be a viable option. What is a California board and care home? They are what intrigued me to leave my job at CNN and go into the world of senior housing/elder care. I was so impressed by the comfort of these homes and the ability to care well for our elderly (and sometimes younger people) that have dementia, are on hospice, have limited mobility, are bedridden etc., that I wanted to be a vital part of this industry and my family has some and we’ve been in business since 2003.

Board and cares are much different than a larger community with quite often a higher ratio of staff to resident. While we do not have the variety of food and activities that a larger community offer, the prices are often more attractive and inclusive of all care. Southern California Senior Resources prides itself on going over the options of board and care homes with all of the families that we have proudly helped to place.

This beautiful photo hangs in my office so I see it daily during the work week. It’s a good reminder of how precious life is and how quickly things can change. We honor our fellow Americans that lost their lives on 9/11 and those they left behind. We have been to the World Trade Center site twice and there is still a sad heaviness to be in its presence. 🙏🇺🇸

A scorching rest of the week in SoCal. 🥵 One selling point (if you will) with retirement/assisted living communities and memory care, is that residents can run that air conditioning all day if they like and utilities are included in the basic monthly fee. Neither of my grandparents had air conditioning and I recall going to their homes and sitting outside in the shade as it was much cooler than being inside, even though they had fans which would just recirculate the hot air. Hopefully there are cooling centers in your area for those that are afraid of the high cost of running their air conditioning, if they do have it.

Prior to Covid, if I saw an elderly person sitting by themselves at a coffee place and there was a chair available at their table, I’d ask if I could join them. Most of the time, people would say yes. I met a gentleman who played in the studio with the Eagles, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt, Poco and others. I met another gentleman who played hockey with the New York Rangers. I met a lovely woman who survived the Holocaust, among others. I thought and still do that even if it’s just posted on social media, we should have a share a seat with a senior day weekly, or monthly. My son and I were in a Ralph’s recently, and an elderly gentleman could not find his car. We helped him to find it as there are two entrances and exits at this store. I say this because I know that one day, it will be me sitting and feeling lonely in a coffee place or not having the ability to find my car on my own. So while I can, I hope to help all others in need.

Since Southern California Senior Resources opened our doors almost twenty years ago, I’ve always considered our placement process for our clients into larger assisted living & memory care communities, and board & care homes to be done with compassion. And today, that still holds very much true. Our placement process is different than that of the larger nationwide referral agencies. Staying local and working with a smaller placement agency should be highly considered when it comes to such an important decision.
