Meet our latest DAISY winner, Alexis Desfosses, from Huntington's Neuroscience Stroke Center. Alexis was nominated by a grateful patient who wrote this heartfelt nomination:

“Alexis is not only a highly skilled nurse but also someone who balances clinical excellence with genuine compassion. She is informative, attentive and always willing to go above and beyond for her patients. She takes the time to sit next to me, truly connect by listening and explaining my care in a way I can understand, and empower me by reminding me that, even though my speech is limited because of my stroke, I can count on her and the nursing team to be there for me. In those moments, it feels like I am her only patient.

"One moment that stood out to me happened at the end of her shift, right before she was leaving for a four-day break. Although she had already finished giving a report to the oncoming nurse, she stopped by and asked if I wanted to try walking. As a stroke patient, that is not an easy task. Yet Alexis patiently and carefully supported me, showing such kindness and encouragement. While I was walking, my wife became overwhelmed with emotion. I could see her distress, and I felt trapped in my own body, unable to comfort her as her husband, which gave me anxiety. Without missing a beat, Alexis saved the day. She encouraged my wife and me to walk back to my room together. Her shift was already over, but she stayed. She sat calmly with my wife, spoke to her with compassion which reassured her. Alexis’s words and presence eased her fears in a way I could not. Writing this brings me tears of hope and gratitude for the care I received.

“This is just one example of the many ways Alexis goes above and beyond. She truly embodies nursing excellence. Through her care, patience and compassion, she has helped me feel more connected to myself again after everything I have been through. It has been a long journey, but Alexis has made a lasting impact on me and my family. She is the ray of hope that someone in my situation desperately needs. She is a remarkable nurse and fully deserving of the DAISY Award.”

Congratulations, Alexis, on this well-earned honor! Your dedication and compassion make a lasting impact on patients and families every day.

Yesterday, ABC7’s Denise Dador reported on new research linking regular melatonin use to heart failure—but experts say the supplement may not be the real issue. Huntington Health Sleep Specialist and Pulmonologist, Raj Dasgupta, MD, emphasizes it's an association, not causation. Chronic insomnia and underlying conditions like sleep apnea could be the real culprits.

Many experts have questioned the research, saying it's not likely the supplement itself causes a higher risk of heart problems, but rather melatonin might be masking other problems.

Our Story

In February of 1892, a group of prominent local citizens decided that their community would best be served by a local medical facility. They formed the Pasadena Hospital Association and, several years later, a nonprofit hospital was opened for service. In 1900, a committee was appointed to raise funds to build and endow a permanent hospital building. The committees task was made much simpler when Mrs. Caroline Walkley, a local resident, donated a plot of land on which to build the proposed facility. Two years later, at a cost of $21,000, the 26-bed Pasadena Hospital opened on the present site of Huntington Hospital. The Great Depression of the late 1920s and early 1930s closed down many hospitals and other businesses across the country. Pasadena Hospital, too, faced an uncertain future. But in 1936, a $2 million gift from the estate of Henry E. Huntington allowed the hospital not only to survive, but to thrive. The funds were used to build a new main building, clear all hospital debts, and provide service and parking facilities. In addition, the Huntington Trust was established and today continues to support the hospital's vital work. Huntington Hospital’s official page is intended to support the mission and values of the hospital, provide information and news related to the hospital and create a forum for dialogue and interaction among its followers.
