Gathering together with the San Gabriel Valley Psychological Association community is meaningful and rich. Saturday night was the annual January Jubilee festivities, preceded by a retreat for mental health professionals who lost homes or were displaced a year ago in the Eaton Fire. I was privileged to be one of the retreat facilitators, alongside my colleague Amy Guthrie from Trilogy Healing Arts. Gathering to connect, be mindful, regulate our nervous systems, and engage in expressive arts – all in service of community and growth… so important in these times! Thank you to Dr. Shannon Thomas, Dr. Elisa Hernandez and your teams for all the beautiful work you invested to make all this happen! Let’s keep growing and creating!

Our bodies and minds have a way of remembering anniversaries – those significant moments of loss and trauma, as well as recovery and healing. Right now, as we approach the anniversary of the LA Fires, we want to hold space for those who have been impacted – from those who lost homes, schools and places of worship; to first responders; to those displaced temporarily or still; to those who are family; to those who lost loved ones; to those who teach, nurture, coach and counsel those who are still getting their bearings.

We also want to hold space for resilience, strength, creativity and healing. As I listen to children, teens, and adults in our area, I hear about how support comes through ritual, community belonging, and self-compassion. This last year has included times to grow, build new community, create, and heal.
