April is National Month of Hope, which is all about celebrating the power of hope — the belief that things will work out, especially when it seems otherwise. Have you ever noticed how frequently the word ‘hope’ is used in our everyday conversations? Well, this is because hope is a concept that is deeply rooted in our culture and society. So don’t give up and let’s become bearers of hope — spread it and teach it! Because this is the best you can do for yourself and others; to always choose hope over hopelessness.

Stress can be debilitating, and it can cause and/or aggravate health problems. And since stress is a normal part of human existence — nobody is immune to it — it’s important to arm ourselves with knowledge so that we recognize when stress rears its ugly head. (Amazingly, we don’t always notice it’s happening to us.) Stress Awareness Month happens each April. It’s important to learn some strategies for coping with this particular silent scourge.

National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month is observed throughout the month of April. This time is set aside as a special awareness and education month that aims to bring exposure to sexual violence worldwide and educate individuals on how to prevent it. Did you know that every 68 seconds in the U.S., an American is sexually assaulted? Yes, the situation is dire, and this is not just for women; men and children are also equally affected by sexual abuse and assault. Emotional Overeating Awareness Month takes place in April. Emotional overeating is an eating disorder where a person uses food to deal with negative emotions such as anger and sadness, getting an abrupt compulsion to eat whenever they are confronted by such feelings. Because of its relation to food, this disorder is a leading cause of obesity in the United States today. Emotional Overeating Awareness Month provides the opportunity to raise consciousness about the dangers posed by emotional overeating and suggests healthy ways people can cope with stress, negativity, and other negative feelings.

Counseling Awareness Month is celebrated in April every year. It’s a month-long observance of raising awareness and promoting mental health to people of all ages. It also highlights the importance of counseling professionals — from mental health counselors, school and college counselors, substance abuse counselors, to career counselors. It’s the time when their contributions, not only to the healthcare sector but also to society in general, are honored. This celebration also eradicates the stigma of seeking help for mental illnesses. These professionals are here to help, and it doesn’t make anyone less of a person to ask for guidance.

What We Carry: A Hand as a Map of Self

This session is a gentle, reflective art-making experience centered on identity, emotion, and personal storytelling. It will begin with a brief artist reflection and visual presentation, followed by a guided activity where participants trace their hand and fill it with colors, symbols, or words representing what they are carrying or what they wish to release.

The workshop is designed to be accessible and low-pressure. Participants can use simple materials they already have available—such as pens, highlighter, etc.

World Bipolar Day is observed on March 30 every year, on the birthday of Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh — one of the most influential artists in the history of Western art. His creativity was paralleled with his mental illness and he was posthumously diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder dramatically affects the mood and may result in episodes of depression and elation, which can affect one’s health, productivity, and relationships. World Bipolar Day educates and promotes the spread of information on bipolar disorder through international collaborative efforts.
