As adults, we often try to “fix” posture from the outside. We attempt to do this with stretching, strength, and adjustments.

While these things are helpful and beneficial, they may not address the root cause. The truth is, lasting change can often start inside the mouth.

Myofunctional Therapy strengthens the muscles that support nasal breathing, proper tongue & jaw posture, and healthy alignment - helping your body find its natural balance again.

When it comes to childhood airway issues, the “wait and watch” approach often means missing the window for early intervention.

Mouth breathing, snoring, and poor sleep aren’t things kids simply “grow out of”. These signs often point to underlying muscular or growth issues that can affect how the face and jaws develop, which affects how a child sleeps, focuses, and feels every day.

The earlier we address the root cause, the easier it is to guide healthy breathing and development.

Don’t wait and watch. See and act!

If you ignore the airway, you miss one of the biggest drivers of orofacial underdevelopment.

Restricted breathing in childhood is more common than you might think. It can quietly affect growth, sleep, focus, and even facial development.
When a child can’t breathe well through their nose, the body adapts with mouth breathing, poor sleep, and fatigue often follows.
Over time, these patterns can impact the way their jaws, teeth, and airway develop.

As providers, it’s our responsibility to address these issues.

If you or your child struggles with airway issues and have not had an airway screening, please reach out.

If you’re a busy parent juggling nap schedules, snacks, and story time, the idea of adding anything else can feel overwhelming.

But here’s the good news:
Myofunctional therapy is designed to be simple, effective, and doable at home- especially with guidance from a trained therapist.

With just a few minutes a day, your child can work on tongue posture, jaw posture, nasal breathing, and muscle coordination.

These are tiny exercises with big impact and they can often be done during daily routines like brushing teeth, bath time, or reading together.

With a therapist’s support, you’ll get:
- Personalized guidance
- Play-based strategies
- Clear goals that fit into real family life

About 10 years ago, I read an article about how myofunctional therapy can improve TMJ pain. As a dental hygienist, I was seeing patients with TMJ pain daily, so I began researching myofunctional therapy, got trained in it, & soon became OBSESSED with learning everything I could to help my patients thrive! While at , I got to meet the author of that article, , & made sure to tell her how her words changed the trajectory of my life & thereby changed the lives of hundreds more whom I’ve treated. I feel so blessed to have met her & can’t thank her enough for her contribution to the field of OMT!

Just wrapped up an incredible few days at the IAOM 2025 Conference in Salt Lake City 🎉

I had the opportunity to learn from specialists across so many fields- Orofacial Myologists, Physical Therapists, Pediatric Dentists, ENTs, Osteopaths, and more.

Conferences like this remind me why I love what I do- gaining new tools, perspectives, and methods to better support our patients so they can truly thrive. 💙

Did you know your tongue posture can affect your entire body posture?

Myofunctional therapy isn’t just about the mouth- it’s about how your oral muscles, especially the tongue, influence breathing, alignment, and posture from head to toe.

When your tongue rests low or improperly, it can lead to:

❌ Mouth breathing
❌ Forward head posture
❌ Neck and shoulder tension
❌ Poor spinal alignment

Myofunctional therapy helps retrain the muscles of the face, tongue, & jaws- encouraging proper tongue & jaw posture, nasal breathing, and improved head and neck alignment.

✅ Better breathing
✅ Better posture
✅ Better health
