When Ron first arrived at Kindred Hospital East New Jersey, he was completely paralyzed, dependent on life support, and unable to communicate. He had been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, which left him unable to move or express himself. With only a 50% chance of being weaned from the ventilator, his recovery was uncertain, but Ron showed determination from the very beginning.

With support from his dedicated care team and the constant encouragement of his family, Ron began to make slow but steady progress. Over time, he was gradually weaned off the ventilator and able to use a speaking valve through his tracheostomy. Hearing his voice again was a major turning point in his recovery. His swallowing function also improved, allowing him to transition from thickened liquids to a pureed diet.

Ron arrived with three pressure injuries on his left buttock, sacrum, and perirectal area. With consistent wound care, each one showed improvement week by week. Later, he also developed red dry patches on his cheeks and forehead. After treatment with triamcinolone cream, the areas healed completely. By the time he was discharged, all skin wounds had fully resolved.

In the last week of his stay, Ron’s progress accelerated. He began moving his arms, sitting at the edge of the bed, and transferring into a chair. His swallowing strengthened enough for him to enjoy a regular diet, and on November 18, 2025, he reached a milestone that once felt out of reach — his tracheostomy tube was removed. Ron was officially decannulated and breathing comfortably on room air.

Ron left our hospital with renewed independence and hope, transferring to an Acute Rehabilitation Unit closer to home to continue building strength. His journey, from complete paralysis to breathing, speaking, eating, and moving again, has inspired everyone who cared for him. "Thank you for giving me my life back," shared Ron.

We are incredibly proud of Ron’s progress and wish him continued success in his recovery.

Gerard was admitted to Kindred Hospital East New Jersey on October 21, 2025. When he arrived, he was confused, very weak, and breathing through a tracheostomy. He could not speak or eat, and he did not fully understand the limits of his abilities. This made it hard for him to take part in his care, and it was uncertain how much progress he would be able to make.

Even with these challenges, our care team did not give up. With patience, redirection, and daily encouragement, Gerard began having moments of clarity. Each moment became a chance to help him participate more in therapy and regain his strength.

As he improved, Gerard started breathing more on his own, which allowed the team to begin capping trials. A major turning point came when he passed his swallow study and was able to eat regular foods and drink regular liquids again. He continued to work with therapy to build mobility and confidence. Soon he was standing, transferring to a chair, and walking laps down the hallway. Before long, he was even climbing 15 stairs on his own — a milestone that showed how far he had come.

Gerard also experienced strong progress with skin healing. His skin tears and fungal rash healed well, and he had no complications at discharge.

On November 5, 2025, just 15 days after admission, Gerard was successfully decannulated and breathing comfortably on room air. His improvement was remarkable. He went from being confused and dependent to safe, stronger, walking, and communicating clearly.

Gerard was discharged home to continue rehabilitation services. We are proud of his hard work and look forward to seeing him continue to improve on his recovery journey.
