Mouth breathing isn’t just a cute thing your infant/child does, it is information.

Mouth breathing can be very disruptive in your child’s growth + development, & overall wellness. When we are breathing through our mouth vs through are nose we are missing out on a lot of benefits.

• The body is less efficient at taking up oxygen
• The air isn’t filtered or humidified
• Disrupted sleep
• Changes in facial growth & jaw development

Mouth breathing is information that we need to be paying attention to ❕

Developmental milestones are a big topic when you have a baby, and something we get asked about all of the time. And it makes sense because from the moment you become pregnant you and baby are measured on charts and compared to averages. So when you add milestones to the mix it’s hard to not constantly compare your baby to the averages and feel like they are either ahead or behind.

The reality is every baby is different, and will develop at their own pace, so here are the things we focus on in regards to development.

1️⃣ Were there any challenges that they had to overcome? Was your baby premature, colicky, or experience any other number of struggles. Struggles put stress on the nervous system, and the brain is always going to focus on handling that stress before development.

2️⃣ Are they progressing? As long as a baby is making forward progress we are happy. We don’t want to see extreme regressions or the loss of skills.

3️⃣ Are they skipping over milestones? Each milestone serves a purpose for brain and body development so it is essential that babies hit every single milestone. If we are skipping entire milestones more investigation is warranted, and creating opportunities for them to develop that skill later is a must.

4️⃣ What level of frustration is allowed? This is a big one! Development in babies often happens out of frustration. Babies with a lot of tummy time and opportunities to figure out how to get what they want without help from siblings especially will reach milestones faster.

The moral of the story is there is so much that goes into babies development, and reaching milestones. As long as a child is making forward progress we get less worried about the timeline, and more worried about if they are happening in order.

This chart is a good reference point, and always trust your gut with your baby. If you have concerns, ask, and take inventory on any changes you can make at home.

To sum it up: because the nervous system is the boss.

It affects and influences every system, organ, cell, bodily function, and determines how we experience life. It’s that important, and our goal with every single adjustment is to support your nervous system, and help to calm and regulate it. That way it can do it’s job better, which I think we can all agree is a pretty important job.

The truth about chiropractic care, is that it is more than you are giving it credit for. Yes, you read that right! Believing that chiropractic care is only for pain management is stopping you from experiencing the true & full benefits of what you can gain from consistent chiropractic care.

The chiropractic adjustment is not just about moving a bone & restoring movement. It’s restoring proper communication between the brain + body.

The spine is more than just bones, it’s the most direct way to impact our body’s nervous system. It is the protection around our body’s primary sensory organ, the spinal cord. Every adjustment changes how the brain is processing information.

Which is why our patients see such drastic changes in their health & wellness goals! Because when input is changed & improved, so does your bodies output. Chiropractic care improves performance, function, & overall wellness!

The story of anxiety, ADHD, sensory, dyslexia, and all the other labels of neurodevelopmental struggles is a path that we see over and over. All because neurodevelopmental struggles are a story of stress on kids early and often.

We see it all of the time, but the signs that neurodevelopmental issues were coming were there. Over and over parents are told that things like colic, delays in milestones, and repetitive ear infections + sickness were all normal and their kid would grow out of it.

The issue is these are all signs of the nervous system being stuck in a fight flight response. These issues don’t go away and they certainly don’t grow out of them. Instead they grow into something bigger.

A colicky baby that can’t self-soothe turns into a toddler that can’t self-soothe and has excessive tantrums, then a teen with anxiety + depression, and eventually a burnt out adult.

Neurodevelopmental struggles are a story of stress that is stuck on the nervous system early and often that begins to alter the way a child’s nervous system responds to the world. The good news is there is an answer to change that path, and help your child thrive.

If this hits home we have a workshop coming up that you can’t miss! On March 24th we will be doing our Perfect Storm Webinar talking about a natural approach to neurodevelopmental challenges! Head to the link below to learn more and RSVP! We can’t wait to have you join us there!

Sensory struggles can feel overwhelming and complicated, because they aren’t one size fits all. However, once you understand what is going on in the brain it all makes sense.

The main role of our nervous system is to bring messages from the body to tell the brain what is going on in our environment. Once the brain gets those messages it evaluates the information, filters out what isn’t needed, makes decisions, and then sends messages back out to the body to respond to that information. It’s a two way flow of information all day every day.

In a child with sensory challenges the filter of information to the brain is broken, either letting too much or too little information come into the brain. Too much information and the brain starts restricting the amount of sensory information it wants. Too little information and the brain tells the body to seek more out. Leading to either sensory seeking or sensory avoiding behaviors.

Sensory seeking behaviors come from the brain telling the body that it needs more information. These behaviors look like spinning, clicking, humming, moving, wanting tight clothes, wanting snuggles, curling up into tight spaces, and yelling. Basically think more input.

Sensory avoiding behaviors come from the brain telling the body that it is overwhelmed and needs less input. These behaviors look like avoidance, food texture issues, being overwhelmed by clothing, struggling with being dirty, covering their ears, wanting to leave situations, etc. Here, think less input.
Our brains are pretty smart, right?!

Did you know that chiropractic helps to repair the filter of information to the brain to allow your child to balance sensory input and interpret their environment correctly without these behaviors? We get to help kids everyday experience the world around them with more ease!

Join us on March 24th for our Perfect Storm Webinar talking all about Sensory, ADHD + Neurodevelopmental challenges to learn more. Head to the link in our bio to grab your link to join us.

Your child’s behavior isn’t the problem. Their nervous system is.

The nervous system is the boss of every system, reaction, and behavior. So with a nervous system that can’t regulate of course your child can’t control their reactions and behaviors.

The true issue for behavioral and emotional regulation is a brain that is stuck in a fight flight response and as a result is highly overreactionary.

The great news is that chiropractic is amazing at helping to calm the fight flight response by activating the brake pedal side of the nervous system, and regulating their nervous system.

If behaviors are a problem for your child you will definitely want to register for our next Perfect Storm Webinar where we go over the science of what is going on in the brain, and how to regulate the nervous system so your child can get control of their own behaviors. Raise your hand if you have a kid who…..

✔️ Moves at the speed of sound all day, every day

✔️ Goes zero to one hundred fast and seems to have extreme reactions to every scenario

✔️ Seems disconnected because his or her brain is always jumping to the next “thing”

Around here, we call these kids “gas pedal” kids. When our body isn’t adapting to stress as it should, our nervous system shifts into what’s called sympathetic dominance. That fancy phrase means that your body is stuck in fight or flight AKA stress mode.

Our bodies are crazy smart and they love balance! Balance makes us feel comfortable after all. So, to balance out a brain that’s going 10,000 miles an hour, we have two options:

☝🏼Speed up your environment!
Depending on your kid, this can look like many different things. We have the kids who are crazy fidgety and can’t stop moving, the kids who can’t stop talking, or the sensory kids who seek any type of sensory input- movement, noise, or touch. It’s also why your kids crave technology, it is the only thing in their world that moves at the pace of their brain!

✌🏼Slow down your brain!
Enter chiropractic! Our job is to pump the brakes! Through specific adjustments, we’re able to stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system (brakes) and allow that brain to slow down, process what’s in front of it, and integrate that information at more of an appropriate speed!

Pretty cool, right?!
