Alcohol Awareness Month: Know the Timing

Alcohol enters the bloodstream faster than most people realize. Within just a few minutes it is already being absorded, and it typically reaches its peak in about 30-60 minutes, sometimes faster on an empty stomach.

What is slower, and often overlooked, is how long alcohol stays in your body. On average, the body processes about one standard drink per hour. That means even after you stop drinking, alcohol can remain in your system for hours, continuing to affect your reaction time, coordination, and judgment.

This is where people get in trouble: feeling sober is not the same as being sober.

As the initial buzz fades and sense of control seems to return, the blood alcohol level may still be elevated. The false sense of sobriety can lead to risky decisions, especially when it comes to driving.

When it comes to alcohol, the effects come on quickly, but leave much more slowly.

Fast in. Slow out. Trust the science - not the feeling.

Awareness is where change begins. Taking time to refelct on your relationship with alcohol can make a meaninful difference.

Ask yourself: What is driving my drinking? Social connection, routine, or coping with stress?

Your habits can influence many areas of life more than you might realize, including productivity, physical health, finances, and overall well-being.

We have included a self-assessment from the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence to help you check in with your habits.

This straightforward Alcohol self-assessment consists of 26 questions designed to assist you in assessing whether you or someone you know may benefit from learning more about alcohol use.

One of our women's groups recently read Not Drinking Tonight by Amanda E. White.

The book opens up conversations about topics many people face in recovery, including building a social life without alcohol, creating and maintaining healthy boundaries, working through shame connected to past drinking, and learning to regulate emotions and stress without relying on a "comfort substance".

If you are interested in reading the book yourself, feel free to reach out to our office - we have a few extra copies available and would be happy to share them with you.

Sometimes the right book at the right time can open the door to meaningful reflection and growth. 📚

Weekends can feel different in recovery. There may be more free time, more invitations, or more memories of how things used to look. But this weekend doesn't have to repeat the past.

Healthy might look quieter than before. It might look like going home early, keeping your circle small or choosing to stay home and rest. It may feel simple, even unfamiliar. And that is okay! Different is often where growth begins.

Let this weekend be about steady progress, not unnecessary pressure. Let this weekend be about honoring how far you have come.

Recovery is not just about putting down a substance. It is about picking up new habits.

In one of our groups we are reading Atomic Habits by James Clear, and one truth keeps showing up: change happens in the small, daily choices.

Recovery is built in the ordinary moments:
• How we start our mornings
• How we respond to stress
• Who we spend time with
• What we do when emotions feel overwhelming

When the habits change, the outcomes change. And that is where real transformation begins.

Sometimes the hardest part is not the conversation, it is finding the words to start it.

You may rehearse it a hundred times in your head, and yet the words still feel heavy. But it does not have to come out perfectly, it just has to come from the heart. One conversation cannot fix everything, but it can begin something. Your calm, honest concern for a loved one could be the first step toward change.

If you are having a hard time figuring out how to talk to someone you love about their substance use, you do not have to do it alone. Reach out to our office. We are here to support and encourage everyone impacted by recovery.
