In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, WesleyLife Vice President of Operations Janet Simpson reflects on life beyond “cancer-free.” Her honest and hopeful essay explores what survivorship truly means: the lingering concerns, daily choices, and renewed gratitude that shape life after diagnosis. Please read (and share!) her essay via the link below.

A gratitude workshop was on the calendar today! The session included gratitude journaling, card making and apple cider.

There are so many benefits to practicing gratitude in life, and we gave residents an opportunity to reflect deeply through journaling. We ended the session with a chance to send a card to someone - some were going to people who could use a little uplifting, others were going to people they wanted to show their gratitude towards. Each story was inspiring, and we are grateful they took the time for this workshop today!

It was fall clean-up week! We loaded up the bus 4 times to drop off to local thrift stores. Residents cleaned up their apartments and team members went through their storage space!

Research shows decluttering improves mental and physical well-being by reducing stress, increasing focus, and creating a sense of control. A cluttered environment can negatively impact mood and cognitive function, while a tidy one is linked to higher productivity, clearer thinking, and greater happiness. Studies indicate that decluttering provides immediate, tangible results, leading to feelings of accomplishment and satisfaction.

We offer this event twice a year - and it’s always a great success!

Our annual 2025 Health and Well-Being Summit was themed “Pursue Your Joy!”

We invited our local preschoolers to come and have recess with us! The movement, smiles and JOY was contagious!

Central College hosted a Lunch and Learn on our campus teaching us all of the ways to pursue JOY as we age! We even created action plans for ourselves individually and as a community.

Dora from That Paint & Pottery Place helped us create a collaborative art display. Creativity brings many of us JOY, and we love working together to create.

We love this day, and we are thankful to the many residents who participated!

We love partnering with CultureAll each month to bring diverse options of learning and programming!

Gurwinder Kapur recently came for a workshop called “Turban Time”. We learned about his journey from growing up in Southeast Asia to moving to the United States, raising a family in Central Iowa, and continuing to celebrate his culture.

He shared the significance of the turban in the Sikh culture and provided the importance of different colors and materials. We even got a chance to try one on for ourselves!

It was a beautiful day to enjoy at Lake Red Rock! We were thankful to see the sun, got some movement in, and walked on all sorts of different terrains. We are taking in this beautiful fall weather while we can!

A special thanks to Dr. Shuger Fox at Central College and her research students for this challenge!

It's a big month for WesleyLife — and for anyone who's concerned about the impact of ageism. As we join the American Society on Aging in celebrating Aging Awareness Day this month, we're sharing myths and truths about ageism to shed light on the issue and its effects, as well as ways we can change perceptions.

MYTH: Older people are set in their ways. TRUTH: Read what Jill has to say!

At WesleyLife's Ageism Awareness Day panel last week at Wesley on Grand, participants were asked about the benefits of living in a community with others 55 and older. Jill (far right in photo), a resident at The Village, a WesleyLife community for healthy living in Indianola, responded this way:

"One of the most important things we can find in our communities is opportunities to learn new things. For example, we have a yoga class that's wonderful, and 80 to 90 percent of the people who move in have never experienced yoga. They're talked into it by friends, and once they try it and see the benefits in it, they enjoy it.

"We can all share new things with each other and benefit when the communities bring in people who can teach us new things. It's very important to get rid of the stereotype of 'I'm too old to learn something new' or 'I can't change now.' That's baloney!"

We couldn't agree more, Jill. And as we move through October, please come back to this space for ongoing content on ageism and everything WesleyLife is doing to combat it!
