If you speak Spanish and your child answers in English (or the other way around), pause for a moment 🤍

This isn’t confusion.
This isn’t disrespect.
And it’s usually not a speech problem.

Children choose the language they feel safest using in that moment — the one that feels easier, more familiar, or less demanding.
🧠 Safety first.
🗣️ Language follows.

Model the language you want them to hear.
Expand without correcting.
Keep communication pressure-free.

When parents say: 
“Everyone thinks my child is so quiet… but at home they never stop talking.” 
That actually tells me a lot and it’s often a good sign 🤍 
It means your child can communicate. They’re just choosing to use their voice where they feel safest. 
Public spaces come with noise, expectations, and unfamiliar people. Home feels predictable and secure. Many children need that sense of safety before they talk freely. 
Being quiet in public doesn’t automatically mean a speech delay. 
Sometimes it means your child is cautious, observant, and still learning how to use their voice in different environments. 
In some cases, this pattern may be related to selective mutism—an anxiety-based communication difference where a child can speak comfortably in certain settings but struggles to speak in others. It’s not about being “shy” or unwilling, and triggers aren’t always obvious. Anxiety, stress, or past experiences can play a role. 
✨ Communication grows where safety comes first, not pressure.

In our sessions, we honor and accept all forms of communication. We meet children where they are, gently modeling and supporting language without pressure. We never force a child to talk—because feeling safe, seen, and understood comes first 🤍
