I am honored to speak to you today concerning the recent Trump statement that would ban transgender people from serving in the military under any capacity.
It was not long ago that former President Obama set into action the rights of transgender persons to serve honorably. Victories were won and our trans siblings took positive responsibility to serve their country with integrity. Just a few months later, they are back to being second-grade citizens who fear for their careers.
It is no surprise that Trump reneged on his promises to protect the rights of the LGBT community. What was surprising was his ban on any trans person serving IN ANY capacity. The reasons given have not been substantiated. Where is the proof? Where are the studies that show trans people being a burden to the military? Where is the comparison between cis and trans people serving as to how much money is spent on their medical care?
We, as a society cannot continue to treat only some of our citizens as first-class and leave the rest to rot. Whether we are speaking out against LGBT, the rights of transgender people in the military, race, or healthcare, ALL of us are human and therefore deserve to be equally treated as such.
