For me, running a direct care practice means the time in my office is fully intentional—focused on patient care rather than administrative tasks. That freedom allows me to give back in another way: by volunteering podiatric care for our medically indigent neighbors in Escambia and Santa Rosa Counties.

I see podiatry patients at St Joe's, where many are referred through Health & Hope Clinic as well.

At St Joe's, the on average of 4,700 to 5,000 patients each year are a powerful reminder of the ongoing need for accessible, compassionate care.

I first learned about St. Joseph through the IMPACT 100 Pensacola Bay Area —and, coincidentally, from my mom, Dr. Adelaida Torres, who was already volunteering there.

As physicians, we can't do it by ourselves, and it's an honor to serve alongside the dedicated volunteer nurses and social workers whose experience and compassion create such a strong support network for our patients.

Grateful to be part of a community where care still means connection.

It is important to understand that Healthcare DOES NOT EQUAL Health Insurance.

Healthcare is the medical care that is rendered and Health Insurance is a means of paying for that care but not the only way. Talk to your physicians, your providers and to facilities. You can always ask "what's the cash price?" and "do you offer payment plans?"

This article was inspired by conversations by my patients this week who all understand the need for self-reliance that we have learend from living in a hurricane preparedness - don't wait for it to fix itself.

The system is broken. The current shutdown isn’t just politics—it’s a wake-up call.
Health coverage that relies on government stability isn’t security at all.
