This has nothing to do with surgery, but it is fascinating. Says they have identified 4 areas in DNA that determine if you’re right or left handed!

For the first time, scientists have identified the genetic differences associated with left-handedness, a trait found in 10% of the human population.

Removing the appendix laparoscopically is much better than removing it with open technique, even if it is ruptured. I can often get you home the next day after surgery even if it is ruptured! Not always, of course (nothing in medicine is 100%), but your recovery will be so much better laparoscopically!

See this brand new study (for publication July 2019) for all the glorious details! Lower infection rates, quicker recovery, shorter hospital stay, eating solid food quicker are among the benefits!

Should you have your gallbladder taken out during pregnancy or no?

New study suggests don’t—unless it’s really necessary. This study confirms my usual approach. I put off the mild cases till after delivery, only doing the severe cases during pregnancy. Best timing to do the surgery is during second trimester.

This is breaking news on breast cancer genetic testing...the American Society of Breast Surgeons now recommends genetic testing for everyone diagnosed with breast cancer. There used to be a lot of restrictions on who we tested, but not anymore. The main reason for the change is that the cost of testing has come down so much. And the main reason for that is competition...so many companies out there offering this testing now!

Barriers to genetic testing need to fall as knowledge of inherited cancer risks grows, surgeons say.

Almost everything you think you know about the health effects of cannabis, almost everything advocates and the media have told you for a generation, is wrong.

This brief article is a good summary of how to do CPR: call 911 and start compressions, send someone to look fo an AED and use it. No mouth to mouth (except in certain limited cases and for kids). Lot easier than it used to be! Everyone can do it!

CPR has been around since 1960 and has become easier and easier to perform. Even if you aren't trained, doing chest compressions can save lives.
