Doctors and researchers are stunned after an experimental treatment using an anti-parasitic medication —once meant to fight infections showed unexpected success against cancer.

A patient once diagnosed with terminal cancer saw remarkable tumor regression, leaving experts amazed. Early studies suggest the drug might disrupt cancer cell metabolism and activate the immune system to fight tumors more effectively.

This breakthrough hints at a powerful idea — that the next big cancer treatment might already exist in our medicine cabinets.

A 2024 study published in Cancers (MDPI) (PMCID: PMC10814748) investigated methylene blue as a treatment for platinum-resistant ovarian cancer. Researchers implanted carboplatin-resistant human ovarian cancer cells (TOV112D) into mice and observed tumor growth. They found that methylene blue significantly reduced tumor progression in vivo, even showing greater tumor slowdown compared to carboplatin alone in this resistant model.

The study showed this happened because methylene blue acts as a metabolic therapy targeting mitochondria. It altered mitochondrial respiration, oxygen consumption, and membrane potential, disrupting the cancer cells’ energy production. This metabolic stress likely triggered apoptosis (cell death), specifically affecting cancer cells more than normal cells, highlighting mitochondria as a key vulnerability in resistant ovarian cancer.

Light-Activated Dye Shows Promise In Targeting Breast Cancer Cells

Researchers exploring innovative cancer treatments have reported promising findings using a combination of methylene blue and red light therapy. In laboratory studies, scientists observed that this approach was able to selectively destroy many human breast cancer cells while leaving most healthy breast cells largely unharmed.
