Glaucoma is a disease in which the intraocular pressure is high enough to cause damage to the optic nerve. It can vary individually as to what pressure can damage an optic nerve. In some cases, a very high pressure is required to damage an optic nerve, however in other cases, a “normal” pressure can damage a weak or compromised optic nerve. More than 3 million Americans have glaucoma. Some estimates claim that nearly half of these people are not yet aware of the condition as glaucoma typically presents no symptoms.
