Many clients often get clogged, or āstuffed upā during their massage when lying prone, or āface down.ā Have you ever wondered why?
Your sinuses are actually being compressed when you are in this position, so the only option for any mucus is to pool up at the sinuses, causing major congestion. It acts much like your sinuses do when they become inflamed during a sinus infection.
I read on a massage Facebook discussion that using Eucalyptus oil would be super beneficial, but folks, I am here to tell you IT IS NOT!!!!! I went to a spa for my birthday two years ago and she used eucalyptus oil ONE THE HEADREST even before I mentioned anything about congestionā¦she used it as a preventative. I was burning THE ENTIRE TIME! I asked her to change out the cover, but it wasnāt just on the cover, it was on the actual headrest! My eyes and face were burning the entire time I was prone! PLEASE donāt try this unless you KNOW you are not going to burn! You could try keeping a tissue with some eucalyptus on it to see if it will help, but science says it wonāt, mainly because your sinuses canāt help but to be compressed during this part of the massage!
WHAT YOU CAN DO: When you become uncomfortable with congestion, ask the therapist if you can switch to a side lying position (like you would be during a prenatal massage or post surgery). This definitely helps! If you donāt get congested, youāre the lucky winner of a very comfortable prone massage (assuming the actual massage is great lol)
BUT WHAT IF I SUFFER FROM SINUS DRAINAGE, NOT CONGESTION? Well, this is because you have already had loose mucus prior to the massage, so the mucus that is already hanging out in front of the compressed sinuses has nowhere to go except out, so you can try nose sprays that dry sinuses before the massage (but then you may have the problem mentioned above), or just keep a tissue nearby. HOWEVER, PLEASE DONT REQUEST TO HOLD A USED TISSUE IF YOU WANT YOUR HANDS MASSAGED, and PLEASE ACCEPT THE HAND SANITIZER THAT I WILL BE OFFERING AFTER YOU BLOW/WIPE YOUR NOSE!
I hope this info helps!
