Happy Black Midwives Day from the Historic Jamaa Birth Village Cultural Heritage Center💜
Black Midwifery is the original, foundational roots of all forms of midwifery, and the oldest profession in the world.🌿
Since antiquity, Black midwives have held mothers, babies and families in sacred, delicate, loving and wholesome care, embodying the earth & mother spirit in her hands as she ushers in new life.✨
Black midwifery began with the first humans that took breath on the continent of Africa (Alkebulan), and continued as a respected, honored and indigenous practice for generations over hundreds of thousands of years.🙏🏾
While the world since colonialism has not treated Black Indigenous midwives kindly, by attempting to shrink them into mere attendants or support people-at Jamaa-we restore, uphold and continue to grow their legacy through our cultural heritage institutions initiatives, creating a soft and endearing landing space for Black midwives through:
💜The Black Midwifery Museum: At the African Indigenous Midwifery Museum we educate, inspire and preserve the rich and vibrant history of Black midwifery across the diaspora since time immemorial, through exhibits, workshops, and educational series.
✨The AIM Library & Research Institute: Through the AIM LRI, we uphold the integrity, vast wisdom, and knowledge-containing the living evolution of midwifery through a well preserved archive, book collection, oral history record with first accounts, articles, audio visual material and more.
🧡Okunsola’s School of Traditional Midwifery: At OSTM, we restore the African Indigenous fractured midwifery lineage-with it’s destabilization being caused by patriarchy and colonialism-by educating, activating and teaching embodied midwifery skills spanning spiritual, cultural and clinical care, for future community midwives.
We continue to celebrate and uplift Black Midwives Everyday! Join us in this honor by donating to our work at: jamaabirthvillage.org/donate-jamaa/✨
