Bladder Health and the Holidays

During the holidays, many are aware of the extra calories that they may be consuming and try to watch their weight, but we should also be aware of how the "extras" affect our bladder health. As with everything else, moderation is key when it comes to enjoying all those wonderful treats and drinks. With a few tips, you can enjoy and not cause bladder irritation.
- Try to drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, enjoying warm herbal tea is ok, too.
- Alcohol and caffeine both irritate the bladder. Remember to drink a glass of water for every alcoholic or caffeinated beverage that you consume.
- Because sugar and salt can strain the urinary tract, balance your treats with plenty of fruits and vegetables.
- Constipation will affect the bladder as well, so fiber, including beans, oats, and vegetables, are important for your holiday diet.
-Remember to not ignore the urge to use the bathroom and do not strain to empty the bladder either.
- Manage stress with deep breathing.
-Stay active - taking a walk after a meal assists with digestion and helps reduce that weight gain.

What the human body goes through while pregnant is amazing and cannot be discounted! No wonder pregnancy takes a huge physical and emotional toll on those of us with uteruses. Pelvic health PT is here to help!!

Shocker: It takes far more energy to grow life than scientists once believed.

A Duke University study found that pregnancy rivals elite endurance events, making it the most energetically demanding activity the human body can sustain, equivalent to running a 40-week marathon.

Another peer-reviewed study published in Science found that pregnancy requires an additional 50,000 calories over nine months, with 96% of that energy coming directly from the mother. A woman’s resting energy use can rise by up to 30%, meaning her body works harder every single day, even at rest.

To put it in perspective, that’s like eating 50 pints of Ben & Jerry’s or sustaining the daily energy output of a Tour de France cyclist.

The energy it takes to grow life makes pregnancy one of the most extreme athletic feats on Earth. 🫶

September is Gynecological and Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month

Physical therapy is beneficial to address pelvic floor dysfunction associated with gynecological cancer and treatment. Pelvic floor dysfunctions could include incontinence, constipation, diarrhea, sexual dysfunctions, or pelvic pain. Physical therapy will look at range of motion and strength deficits as well as soft tissue and scar tissue adhesions from radiation and/or surgery.

If you or someone you know, could benefit from physical therapy, please contact us at www.pelviclovephysio.com
