This is always a post that we like to share with the first major snowfall of the season. Be mindful of how you shovel snow. Check out some helpful tips below…….
Hey Peoria and surrounding areas....if you haven’t heard, there is a snow storm coming.
The forecast is saying it will be a very wet and heavy snow with the possibility of high accumulations. So we thought this was a good time to give a few tips on shoveling snow.
THE PROPER EQUIPMENT
Only use a shovel that is appropriate in length and weight according to your height and strength. Don't feel silly testing it out in the store before you purchase it. Choose a shovel with a curved handle which will aid in keeping your back straighter causing less spinal stress. Consider a blade that is plastic instead of metal which will reduce the weight of the shovel. The snow is heavy enough, right!! If you are worried about weight, purchase a shovel with a smaller blade. The job may take a little longer but you won't be able to overload your shovel with heavy snow that you may not be able to lift properly.
WARM UP
Let's face it, shoveling snow can be a real workout so it is best to prep your muscles for action. Take 5-10 minutes to get the joints moving and increase blood circulation. Stretching your back, shoulders, arms, and legs should be a part of any good warm up and a few minutes of running in place will get the blood flowing.
PROPER TECHNIQUE
Always push the snow out of the way. Avoid picking up throwing the snow as much as possible. By pushing the snow, you avoid twisting and turning. If you must throw the snow, position yourself to throw straight at the snow pile. Stand with your feet shoulder length apart to help maintain balance. Keep the shovel close to your body and NEVER bend at your waste or back. Bend at your knees and tighten your stomach muscles as you lift the snow. This will allow your core to be in control of the lifting, reducing strain on your back. If you need to move the snow to your side, move your feet....NEVER TWIST!
Be kind to your spine! If you experience pain of any kind, stop immediately and seek assistance.....and remember, the office will open at 7:30am Monday morning if you need us. Stay safe and warm!
