Many of us feel lonely or sad during the holiday season. It is supposed to be full of gifts, love and family. For many reasons lots of us are unable to see our family.
Maybe they live too far away. Maybe miscommunication or past arguments keep us away, and to make the first move, opens us to the fear of rejection. It's safer to remain lonely and silent. Is it?

Nothing fills an empty heart or heals a broken one like love from family and friends.

Holding onto old hurts and not talking to loved ones is never healthy and nothing good comes from it. Only deeper hurt and wider chasms, which lead to deeper valleys of sadness and larger lakes of tears.

Only love and forgiveness heals. Accept family as they are. Love them so they are. Reach out now before it's too late. A day will come that you can't anymore.

Life is a short, precious gift. Someday knowledge and money will pass away, but only Love, the greatest of all things, will remain. Love always hopes, and keeps no record of wrongs.

Reach out today in love. From love, forgiveness comes in time. Precious time you are now missing. Extend your hand and open your heart.

You will be surprised by the love you receive in return. This is the path to healing and to peace. Peace ends anxiety. Don't fear; love casts out fear!

Anxiety will cease, for it cannot win if you fill your heart with love and peace instead. There is plenty of love within you--more than you know--enough for everyone.

I wish and hope for all of us that
we share one thing:
a peace-filled, love-filled season.
Do this by giving the only free gift you have...LOVE

Did anyone have a Thanksgiving that was less perfect than a Norman Rockwell painting? You are not alone! Fear not, you aren’t alone, next year you will make different plans…

Did you see the Noah’s Ark cartoon from The New Yorker? Animals forcing Noah and his family to ”walk the plank, ” Hilarious!

As funny as my all-time favorite:

[Frame One]:
Timmy, waving his arms to get someone’s attention, bobbing up and down in deep water after his boat capsized.

Timmy spots his trusty Collie, Lassie, standing on the shoreline searching the water for her master.

Timmy yells, ”Lassie, get help!”

[Frame Two]:
Always obedient, the second picture shows Lassie, lying on her back on an 18th Century fainting couch, obviously deep in reverie. Lassie motions with her front paws to emphasize important thoughts while relating important details in her life story.

Listening intently while taking notes on a legal pad, is an older, bespeckled gentleman who somewhat resembles Sigmund Freud, indicating that Lassie misunderstood the meaning in Timmy’s command to ”Get help!”

I have been discussing with parents how to make sure their children are getting their needs met at school. Many children have ADHD or an unidentified learning disability that is often undiscovered until fifth grade! Sometimes teachers referrals to school psychologists move at a snails pace--taking two, three or four years-- while your child falls father behind his or her peers. a simple three hour evaluation for only a few hundred dollars--often covered partially or fully by your insurance can pinpoint their academic problems early for early intervention! call Dr. Velez today! I specialize in this kind of "detective work!"

Hopefully 2013 will be the year that we stop school shootings! Bullying by peers has been identified as a trigger leading to violence in youth. Most violent youth hate themselves, and are angry at classmates or parents. Signs of trouble and violent comments--often assumed to be jokes--are common. You or your young ones should tell someone in authority if jokes or comments about committing violence are overheard.

Thank you all friends, family and business contacts for "liking" Peoria Psychological Associates new page! I appreciate all your support!

I hope to begin posting responses to any questions that any of you might have...lately, we have discussed postpartum depression and panic attacks.

Nine of ten adults become depressed at one time or another during their life, and is often caused by life stress. Depression in adults can take many forms. Symptoms are often not sadness, but can take many forms. when depression begins, you might feel tired, or just not feel like doing anything. Time may seem to go much slower than usual. Your appetite might increase or decrease, and you may sleep much of the time, or experience insomnia. Negative thinking, obsessive thoughts, or thoughts of death may occur.

Physical changes take place in the brain when we talk about our problems and stress. Writing down your dreams to discuss in therapy can be important if you repress the reasons for your depression. These reasons will often be revealed in your dream life. Dreams may seem odd, but a closer look reveals many messages from our subconscious mind. Psychotherapy--talk therapy--with or without addition of an antidepressant medication usually can cure most symptoms of depression within six months to one year--unless changes to ones live that caused the depression have not changed! Take notice of the factors that you believe ma have caused depression, and make some necessary changes!

I was on the News this evening talking about postpartum depression and postpartum depression with psychosis. This can affect all young mothers with infants. The baby blues are common, and usually subside in a few days or weeks. Clinical depression after birth is less common. Postpartum psychosis is uncommon, a rare disorder, but it can be dangerous, as mothers can hear voices telling them to do away with themselves or their babies. Both require medication and psychotherapy. Please call Dr. Jane Velez for further information. She is taking new clients now, and accepts most insurance...

How about panic attacks? If you have ever had one, you feel like you are going to die. Your heart races, you feel feel faint and sweaty, similar signs to a heart attack, and quite frightening! Call Dr. Velez, an expert in treating panic disorder...
