The Society for Integrative Oncology is a non-profit, multidisciplinary organization established in 2003 to advance evidence-based, comprehensive, integrative healthcare to improve the lives of people affected by cancer. The Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary organization founded in 2003 for health professionals committed to the study and application of complementary therapies and botanicals for cancer patients. It provides a convenient forum for presentation, discussion and peer review of evidence-based research and treatment modalities in the discipline known as integrative medicine. It makes a clear distinction between "alternative" or unproven and "complementary" or tested useful therapies in cancer care.Integrative oncology is a seamless rapprochement of interventions that benefit cancer patients. Because a constantly growing number of cancer patients throughout the world turn to both alternative and complementary therapies as part of their cancer treatment plan, it is essential that oncologists have ready access to information about research, existing treatment programs, and both the benefits and dangers of the wide range of complementary therapies available today. NEW Research Blog!

SIO is a partner in the IMAGINE Project (Implementing Massage & Acupuncture into Oncology Care), a 4-year implementation project funded by the Patient Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). Read the latest IMAGINE research blog, “Acupuncture and Massage Therapy for Cancer Pain Relief: Evidence-Based Benefits”. Learn how integrative therapies such as acupuncture and massage therapy are effective non-medication options for safely and effectively reducing cancer-related musculoskeletal pain and related symptoms, such as fatigue and insomnia.

The IMAGINE project is currently implementing evidence-based oncology acupuncture and massage protocols in 35 academic and community cancer centers across the United States, helping thousands of people with cancer find relief from musculoskeletal pain.

Are you interested in watching one of our 2025 pre-conference workshops?

Patients with cancer are increasingly looking to incorporate dietary supplement use for mitigation of adverse effects or for their purported anti-cancer properties. Dietary supplements, when combined with cancer therapy, should be evaluated to determine potential risks or interactions by informed health care providers. We propose to conduct a 105-minute workshop to advise clinicians and pharmacists on strategies that will improve decision-making regarding assessment of safety and integration of dietary supplements in cancer care. The workshop will commence with background information and firsthand experience provided by oncology clinicians regarding the use of dietary supplements concurrently with cancer therapy. Following the introduction, experienced integrative medicine pharmacists will discuss the utilization of various tools and resources for assessing the efficacy and safety of dietary supplements. Following this didactic portion of the workshop, the presenters will facilitate breakout sessions where participants will be assigned cases and be asked to identify drug-supplement interactions and any supplement-disease or supplement-laboratory concerns. The interactive portion of the workshop will be followed by a discussion session.

Are you interested in watching one of our 2025 pre-conference workshops?
This workshop, Oncology Acupuncture 101: Guideline-Based Foundations and Safety Strategies, offers a comprehensive introduction to the integration of acupuncture into oncology care. Hosted at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI), a leader in cancer care and research, and supported by SIO Acupuncture SIG, the session is designed for acupuncturists as well as other integrative oncology professionals, including oncologists, nurses, and allied health providers. By broadening its scope, the workshop aims to equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to integrate acupuncture into multidisciplinary cancer care teams and improve referral pathways. The first half of the session provides foundational knowledge on oncology acupuncture, including its evidence-based applications for managing symptoms such as pain, chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), and hot flashes. Presenters will review major integrative oncology guidelines (ASCO, SIO, NCCN) and discuss how acupuncture complements conventional cancer treatments. Specific attention will be given to safety protocols, including lab value interpretation and infection control, ensuring that all participants understand how to safely refer or administer acupuncture in complex oncology settings. The second half emphasizes experiential learning through interactive breakout sessions.

Are you interested in watching one of our 2025 pre-conference workshops?

This workshop explores the integration of Ayurvedic principles into oncology care, focusing on the culinary applications of Ayurvedic herbs and spices. With a growing body of scientific evidence supporting the role of diet and gut microbiome in cancer symptom management, this session will provide both theoretical insights and practical applications. Participants will engage in hands-on learning and discussions on how Ayurvedic dietary principles, including the pharmacological properties of herbs and spices, can support personalized symptom management, improve nutritional intake, and enhance quality of life (QoL) for patients undergoing and recovering from cancer treatment.
