There are a lot of these photos floating around after the passing on Wednesday December 17th of John Barnes, the Father of Myofascial Release. Although, in more recent years, he would joke that Grandfather of Myofascial Release was more appropriate. The truth is, he touched the lives of thousands of therapists and the patients they treat.

Along with heavy hearts and a profound feeling of loss, I am sensing an overwhelming collective feeling of gratitude for John and the legacy of Myofascial Release he instilled in the therapists that trained under him,

May we all continue sharing the message of authentic healing and living that he wanted for all of us. We are indeed blessed 🙏💖🙏.

Confessions of a Myofascial Trigger Point

I was never meant to be permanent. I began as a moment, a response, a slight tightening when holding felt safer than releasing. At first, it was subtle, just a brief pause in the tissue's rhythm. But the body asked me to stay. So I did. I shortened my fibers, thickened my layers, and held the chemistry still. I became a place where the river slowed and gathered its weight.

The body learned to move around me. Fascia stiffened along familiar lines, rerouting tension and sensation elsewhere. Pain drifted outward, tracing old pathways through the shoulder, jaw, back, or breath. I wasn’t creating chaos. I was containing it. I held pressure because something inside wasn’t ready to let go.

Then the hands came, not hurried, not demanding. They rested with warmth and attention, and I felt the first change before I understood it. Compression softened the alarm. The nervous system quieted its vigilance. Hyaluronic layers warmed and began to slide. A gentle current brushed past me as the fascial wave moved through the body, reminding the tissue of motion I thought had been lost.

When the wave reached me, it paused. I was seen. The hands didn’t press me deeper into holding. Instead, they slipped beneath me, lifting me gently toward the bone. The pressure shifted in different directions, changing the shape of everything I had been holding together. My fibers lengthened. Blood returned. Chemistry softened. I felt warmth where there had been tightness and a trembling where there had been certainty.

I tried to stay. Old patterns don’t dissolve easily. But time was offered instead of force. Breath moved. Electrical chatter quieted. The nervous system loosened its grip on the story I had been carrying. Slowly, and with only a little drama on my part, I melted. The dam cracked, and the water I had been holding found its way forward again.

As I released, the river surged outward, carrying the change through the fascial lines that connect the whole body. Where I once stood, there was space, warmth, and movement.

I was never the enemy; I was the pause that kept the body safe until it was ready. And when it was finally met with patience, presence, and understanding of a healer like you, I let go. The river remembered itself, and so did I.

Who am I and what is Holistic Therapy and Wellness all about?

Hi! My name is Celeste Kostohryz and I am so excited to be able to share a holistic approach to healing and recovery with the Perham area. I have been a physical therapist for over 20 years. I started to feel like something was missing from the care I was giving to some of my patients several years ago. I started researching the body from a more holistic view. This led to courses based in psychology and looking into how our cells store the experiences we have. This made sense to me on a personal and professional level. I was also introduced to myofascial release a few years ago for a back injury that had been limiting me since high school. Being a physical therapist for so many years, I was frustrated with the pain and discomfort I still experienced. MFR treatments made such a difference in my life that I sought out specialized education and training myself. I started to see this as another piece I was missing.

My unique approach blends my traditional physical therapy back ground, my recent studies in psychology taking into account the whole body and my Myofascial Release training.

My techniques can be effective for a variety of things including back pain, headaches, whiplash, pelvic pain, neck pain, sports injuries, repetitive motion injuries (including carpal tunnel), birth trauma or injuries, chronic pain, disc problems, migraines, neurological dysfunction, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, adhesions, jaw pain (TMJ), painful scars, scoliosis, infants/children, sciatica, women’s health issues (including pregnancy), etc. I think you get the idea! But diagnoses aside, my passion has become helping people recover from injuries or trauma, taking into account mental health, and helping the body release that which it no longer needs. My ultimate goal is to help you recover and live your best life with purpose.

Let me help you by freeing up some of your restrictions and giving you effective self treatment techniques so you can be an active part of your healing.
