“If you can’t be honest with yourself, you can’t get sober.”

Sobriety and honesty are inextricably linked. No one knows this better than Scott. He’s a Behavioral Health Technician at Hope Ranch who also knows addiction personally.

One of the aspects of truly being honest with yourself in sobriety is to acknowledge your character defects.

In the context of recovery, character defects refer to the negative traits or behaviors that can impede personal progress, and they can also hinder the ability to maintain sobriety. Common examples include self-centeredness, dishonesty, impatience, and fear. These defects often stem from the following:

- Underlying emotional issues or past traumas
- Unhealthy relationships
- Poor decision-making
- Tendencies to revert to old habits

Recognizing and addressing character defects is crucial for recovery, allowing individuals to foster healthier behaviors, improve relationships, and achieve a more balanced and fulfilling life.
