Miami County Tobacco Awareness Group

Miami County Tobacco Awareness Group We try to help those that use tobacco by offering our Free to Be Tobacco Free support group for the following:

1. There is no charge to attend.

Our mission is to reduce tobacco use in Miami County and advocate for policies that protect people from exposure to secondhand smoke in public places and workplaces. Persons who are ready to quit and need help
2. Those who have quit and want help to stay that way
3. People who are thinking about quitting, but aren't sure they can do it

This group meets at Dukes Memorial Hospital in Peru. The leader is a certified cessation instructor. Call 764-472-4450 to register for the next class. We also do this by educating children and youth about the dangers of tobacco use so that they may never start. In addition, we advocate for policy change in all indoor public places and all indoor work places to protect non-smokers from the dangers of secondhand smoke. We also offer the "Smoke-Free Baby" class for pregnant women who smoke and are ready to quit. This improves the mother's health, and gives her baby a good, healthy start in life. Participants in this group receive free disposable diapers for attending. Our group also partners with local employers, health care providers, and social service agencies to help their employees and clients to be smoke free.

Here is todays Friday Fun Fact:

SGR Friday Fact: Flavor is a key component in the to***co industry’s marketing strategy that targets some groups, including kids.

“In addressing the public health consequences of these products, consideration needs to be given to ingredients and design features that can contribute to product addic¬tiveness and marketing approaches that can contribute to use patterns leading to addiction.”
“… menthol in ci******es was a design feature that produced physiological effects, includ¬ing sensory effects contributing to to***co use; and mar¬keting and product branding of menthol and its effects also contributed to initiation and persistence of cigarette smoking.”
SGR Chapter 14, Current Status of To***co Control, page 782

Things you can do now:
• Mariah from Mayor’s youth council/VOICE has requested to speak to the Kokomo School Board meeting on November 10th about youth usage rates of e-ci******es, as well as e-cigarette marketing tactics that target kids, such as flavors, and promotional items and OTP.
• Collaborate with your coalition to develop a “to***co is not a treat” holiday-themed LTE campaign highlighting flavored to***co marketing in your community.
• Take pictures of flavored to***co products being marketed and sold in your community, and help educate community members.
• These are all things that we can do and inform Councilman Bob Cameron that we are moving forward to helping educate the youth as well as the entire community.

Post this Friday Fact on social media and use some great visuals.
Review the fact sheets, press releases, and ad galleries on the Campaign for To***co Free Kids website to learn more about marketing of sweet to***co products.
Search online for websites and social media pages for the locally-owned electronic cigarette/vape shops to see what flavors and promotions they are offering. Let your coalition members what you found.

Americans for Non-smoker' Rights Foundation (ANRF) keeps track of smoke free legislation around the world. Check this site to find out more:

“When you’re 15, it’s hard to imagine the consequences of your decisions. I never thought I would suffer this much,” said former smoker Bill Busse, who lost vision in his left eye and had his leg amputated because smoking worsened his diabetes.

Sometimes I wonder "What was going through their heads?" This was the question I asked last weekend when the Indiana General Assembly wrapped up another session. Once again, they chopped the budget for To***co Prevention & Cessation programs, this time from $8 million to $5 million. How can they continue to cut funding for a program that saves $56 for every dollar spent? Check this link for more on this.

Dan Carpenter: A program that's saved countless lives and dollars from the scourge of to***co gets cut again by the legislature, and advocates call it premeditated.
