Big discussions with our 7th and 8th graders as we talk about real life issues.

While Wise Girls isn’t therapy, I’m always grateful when I bring in the knowledge and skills I have developed in my 25 years as a therapist to help girls with tough times. Because sometimes what gets brought up needs someone with expertise and training to help girls know what to do.

Issues with safety, risky behaviors, substance use, and a variety of other issues that can pop with the young teen population are addressed in really compassionate ways along with when and how to get adult help.

Young adolescence is a tricky time where behaviors can really start to change for some and leads to even more changes as they shift into high school.

I am so glad this group has built a solid circle of trust with each other because it’s giving them a grounded place to unload and refuel.

Girls In-Service offers our members so many opportunities!

This week, among connecting and sifting through how to handle life’s dramas, we had an amazing guest speaker and practitioner join us.

Brittany Hatcher, of .co brought her story of all the the uncertainty, life choices, and challenges she’s experienced allowing her to arrive into one of the best place she’s ever been in her life—running breath work groups and working with individual clients.

She took our sweet 10th-11th graders through a somatic practice and left them better for it.

Post session, our members shared how this experience was just what they needed. They left lighter, happier, and more connected to themselves and each other. 🥰

Brittany works with both adults and teens so please check out her services. I can’t recommend her enough!

Here’s to community and growing Wise Girls one breath at a time!

I’m proudly posted up here with Chris Rafanelli, the Superintendent of Liberty School in Petaluma, where we had a great night as I presented a part of the “Helping Worried Kids” parent talk.

We had a dynamite night with over 40 staff and parents to learn more about stress, anxiety, and worry. From the brain and body science to helpful tools and strategies, we talked together about how to really support kids.

And spoiler alert—it starts with you parents. In order to ever be helpful, you must learn to regulate your own nervous system. You can’t help your kid if you are all revved up and dysregulated or your cup is just down right empty.

There’s so much more to share as the science and research are aplenty on this topic. There are many great tools and strategies that come with this talk and our own “Helping Anxious Kids” 6 week parent series I’ll be running starting January 13. Join our mailing list to stay up to date on all our workshops for both parents and kids.

There’s so much that happened leading us to here. The moment where an entire group of 7th and 8th graders make the group decision to bust out into a plank.

It had nothing to do with nutrition and movement.

It was not prompted by the facilitators.

There was no reward.

So why would a group of 7th and 8th graders willingly do one of the most challenging exercises voluntarily?

Because in all their learning and growing, they’re developing healthy coping skills, and they put one to use right here.

After a lengthy discussion with intense and relevant topics shared, the group discharged all that energy by a group member shouting, “I feel like doing a plank right now! Whose going to join me?” Then 11 girls planked it out, and left feeling connected, supported, and loved.
