As the only pelvic health occupational therapist in Sonoma County serving adult men and women, I want to be the one to break this down clearly, because pelvic floor exercises are so much more than “just do Kegels,” and your symptoms deserve real answers.
You may benefit from pelvic floor exercises (and a tailored OT approach) if you’re experiencing any of the following:
• Leaking urine with coughing, sneezing, laughing, jumping, or exercise
• Urinary urgency or frequency that interrupts your day
• Constipation or bowel leakage
• Pelvic pressure or heaviness that worsens with activity
• Pain with intimacy
• Chronic hip, back, or pelvic pain
• Diastasis recti or core weakness postpartum
• Difficulty holding urine
• Painful periods or endometriosis-related discomfort
These symptoms are common, but they’re not normal and they don’t have to be your “new normal,” no matter how long you’ve had them.
Pelvic floor exercises, when done through an OT lens, focus on coordination, breath, posture, daily habits, and functional movement.
