Happy Earth Day! Sweaty, no-makeup, but happy. 😜 Today I'm rededicating to my pledge to be a more eco-conscious earthling! This year so far I've been re-using all of my grocery bags.... Maybe if we all do that, a few less plastics are made, or a few less trees are needlessly taken down.
* Paperless Business - I continue my paperless journey. The truth is I LOVE paper, but I don't think I need it for everything. All of my bills come via digital delivery now. I also switched over to digital workbooks for classes. Every once in a while I just feel like printing up a set for people (and so I do), but I'm mostly paperless there. Which saves a lot. Now I'm trying to get all receipts paperless.
* Recycling - I remember someone once telling me that you REALLY need to wash things before you toss them into the recycle bin. I've been a lot better with that this year, rededicating to my recycling efforts, and picking things out of the trash if I see that people have made a mistake. Now I'm trying to be better when I am out and about.
*Grocery Packaging - I still buy a lot of disposable things that come in plastic. But 3 years ago I invested in glass food prep containers, and that has helped me in surprising ways. Now that I have containers that are pretty, easy to stack, and easily identifiable, I more often cook food in bulk with fresh ingredients. I buy mostly fresh veggies instead of the ones with plastic and styrofoam packaging. I will choose cardboard milk over plastic, and I've been making more juices instead of purchasing them. But I'm still weaning myself from a lot of conventional food like canned beans. I store my pastas an quinoas in glass... so my next step there is to buy more frequently from bulk instead of packaged foods. And this year I've returned to some mild gardening to lessen the footprint.
I think we have to start wherever we're at, without guilt or judgement. I read an article that some people are attributing the rise in colon cancer in young people partially to the influx of microplastics.
I hold a vision where we're able to come together as a human community and really bring our hearts to stopping the poisonous manufacturing processes that are out of alignment with our world.
We have to start with one tiny step, or it will feel so overwhelming we won't do anything. Some of us are in more influential places of power where we can effect direct and fast change. But ALL of us are a part of this.
I stitched my old dresses and got a few extra years out of them. It felt empowering. Even though I still love shopping for new things, I know it's really healthy to let go of the hungry spirit of over-consumerism.
I have to remind myself to take tiny sustainable steps. As I do, I feel so much more connected to, and responsible for, the world around me.
Every 3rd Sunday of the month, we do an online meditation, HEALING FOR THE HEART OF THE WORLD. It has been incredibly uplifting, and I hope you'll join me for that next month, in May. That's one way I've stayed connected to my earth healing vow!
Happy Earth Day!
