Meet Michael: A Story of Strength and Recovery

After serving in the U.S. Navy, Michael faced challenges with mental health, substance use and stability. Seeking help led him to the Military Program at Poplar Springs Hospital, where he found structure, care and a community that truly understands military culture.

Through the Crisis Track, Michael gained tools to manage stress, stay consistent with medication, and focus on self-improvement. The veteran community there became a support system built on trust and respect.

Michael’s message to fellow service members and veterans:
“Reach out before it becomes a crisis. There is real strength in asking for help.”

As we approach Veterans Day, Poplar Springs Hospital proudly stands with the men and women who’ve served our nation — especially those facing the challenges of homelessness and transition.

Did you know that across Virginia, veterans make up nearly 6% of the homeless population? Many struggle with mental health needs, post-traumatic stress, or barriers to affordable housing. At Poplar Springs Hospital, we’re committed to being part of the solution.

Today, our Director of Business Development, LeMar Taliaferro, partnered with the Petersburg Breakfast Rotary Club and hit the road to deliver essential supplies, ranging from fresh produce to food staples, to The Hope Center (http://spklr.io/6181Bz4uV), which supports veterans and the homeless in need. Every box loaded and every mile driven is a small way we can give back to those who gave so much.

To our veterans, thank you for your service, sacrifice and strength.

Poplar Springs Hospital remains dedicated to supporting your mental health, healing, and hope. Learn more by visiting http://spklr.io/6183Bz4uX

Michael Triggs, CEO of Poplar Springs Hospital, recently served as the keynote speaker at the Community Counts: Legislative Breakfast. In his role as Board Director of the Virginia Association of Independent Special Education Facilities, Mr. Triggs spoke passionately to lawmakers, educators and families about the importance of special education and the meaningful impact it has on our communities.

His message aligns perfectly with October’s observances of ADHD Awareness Month and Mental Illness Awareness Week, both of which highlight the importance of understanding, early intervention and continued support for individuals with unique learning and behavioral health needs.

Did you know that something as simple as a uniform can help reduce stress at work? Having a unified dress code takes away the daily pressure of deciding what to wear, which means one less thing to worry about before your day begins. This helps minimize decision fatigue, the mental exhaustion that comes from making too many small choices throughout the day.

Uniforms also help create a sense of belonging and teamwork. When everyone feels like part of the same group, it boosts morale, unity, and focus across the workplace.

At Poplar Springs Hospital, our Patient Access department voted for a unified dress code, and we answered the call. We value a supportive environment that promotes mental well-being for both our patients and our team.

On Mental Health Awareness Day, we wanted to share that if you’re looking to work in a positive, team-oriented environment where mental health matters.
