Shirley Bader is our eleventh veteran who is seventy-four years old. After graduating from high school in 1969, Shirley joined the Air Force. Her basic training was in San Antonio, Texas, which is the only base that conducts basic military training for the Air Force, and now Space Force. She did receive advance training in Waco Texas. Most of her service was near San Antonio. She served three years, as a medic. She worked primarily on a maternity ward. “We were a military family; my father was in the Air Force; my brother Michael was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam.”
After completing her service, Shirley used her GI bill to go to LPN school. She was a LPN for ten years. “It is a good program. It did not cost me anything but time, and I got paid for that.”
Her youngest daughter, Rachel also followed her and joined the Air Force.

Harry Flenner is our tenth veteran who is seventy-seven years old. Harry reported that his service began in 1968 and lasted until 1971. His basic training was at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, “I remember the sandbox,” he said with a grin. He also served time at Fort Lee, Virginia.
He was in Vietnam and saw combat. He reported being a door-gunner for six months. He also was a jack of all trades, describing doing miscellaneous items, and at one point working in a warehouse. “The army finds you something to do, although they struggled to figure out what they wanted to do with me. They wanted me to be a mechanic on an aircraft carrier, but I did not feel qualified to do that.”
When discussing Vietnam, “I was there when they started to pull out. I called it the Johnson War, because Johnson wanted to make money from it. Kennedy was shot because of Vietnam because he would have gotten us out of the war. Johnson genuinely wanted the war to continue.”
When asked if he was proud serving his country, he admitted that “at the time, no I was not proud. I must admit I debated about going to Canada, but my parents talked me out of it, but now I am proud of my service, and I am glad that I served.”

Roger Mongold is our ninth veteran who is seventy-eight years old. Roger served in the Army, starting in 1968 and completed a thirteen-month tour in Vietnam. His rank was SP/4. He had also spent time in Germany. During some of that time, he was an assistant to an officer. He did note that either traveling to Vietnam, or coming back, they stopped in Hawaii. It was very brief, but he had always remarked how good Hawaii smelled.
