One of the challenges that non-profits face is having to raise money to cover expenses. Northern Community Mediation has always been successful in doing so. Why Because we have FUN planning our events. That is why we have our FUNding Committee. We plan FUN FUNdraisers. Set aside Monday, March 16 for our annual Oscars After Party. Lots of food, lots of prizes, lots of fun. A do-not-miss event.

What a treat! On Monday, January 5, the Marty Van De Car Chef's Challenge was held in the Safe Restaurant at the Odawa Casino. The purpose of the fund raiser was to raise money for scholarships at North Central Michigan College. Three chefs competed, each one serving three courses. One of those chefs was our very own board member Krstin Hasse. For the Amuse-Bouche, she prepared a warm winter brie, for the appetizer Oyster Rockefeller topped with a smoked pork belly, and for the entree Korean short ribs. To die for.

Attendance is essential for a child to be successful in school. That is why Northern Community Mediation offers free mediation services to the schools to address a student's attendance. By bringing school personnel, parents and students together, with the help of the mediator, they can come up with a plan to improve attendance. And, in 85% of the cases that are referred to mediation, attendance improves.

Part of the Kwanzaa celebration is having a Kwanzaa altar o r table, which typically includes

• A mat (Mkeka), which symbolizes present and ancestral work.
• A unity cup (Kikombe cha Umoja) used to perform a ritual with libations.
• Crops (Mazao), which include favorite fruits and vegetables that are intended to help people celebrate the fruits of their labor.
• A candleholder (Kinara).
• Seven candles (Mishumaa Saba).
• Corn (Muhindi), a symbol of children and the family’s future.
• Gifts (Zawadi).
