Part of the Kwanzaa celebration is having a Kwanzaa altar o r table, which typically includes

• A mat (Mkeka), which symbolizes present and ancestral work.
• A unity cup (Kikombe cha Umoja) used to perform a ritual with libations.
• Crops (Mazao), which include favorite fruits and vegetables that are intended to help people celebrate the fruits of their labor.
• A candleholder (Kinara).
• Seven candles (Mishumaa Saba).
• Corn (Muhindi), a symbol of children and the family’s future.
• Gifts (Zawadi).

The federal Agricultural Mediation Program was enacted by Congress in 1987, to help farmers. The Michigan Agricultural Mediation Program (MAMP), of which Northern Community Mediation (NCM) is a member, provides free mediation services for Michigan farmers. As a farmer, no matter what your dispute entails, such as a lease disagreement, NCM can help you without having to go through the costly and stressful process of litigation. Call 231.487.1771.

At sundown on Sunday, December 14 Hanukkah will begin. One of the traditions in this celebration is the lighting of the Menorah candles for eight nights, which represents the triumph of light over darkness and the resilience of the Jewish faith. Through the Menorah’s symbolism, Jewish communities honor their history, faith, and cultural identity, spreading hope and kindness. Northern Community Mediation extends to everyone hope for a world of peace and kindness.

The only thing that cannot be mediated is innocence or guilt in a criminal case. Other than that, mediation can be an appropriate manner in which to resolve a conflict. Often, the disagreement cannot be classified as a specific type of dispute. Rather, the dispute is of a more general nature involving two or more parties.

Disputes among neighbors, family members, even friends can often fester over time such that what started out as a relatively insignificant incident grows into a major catastrophe with no end in sight and only disgruntled individuals. No matter what that dispute is about, Northern Community Mediation can help.

Introduced by Representative Hank Vaupel in 2020, Public Act 258 of 1974 of the Mental Health Code was updated. There were four key components to this revision. 1) This law included mediation as a form of dispute resolution Community Mental Health clients could request. 2) It required that neutral, highly trained mediators conduct the mediation sessions. 3) It spelled out strict timelines. 4) It recognizes that agreements reached in mediation are binding.
