World Kindness Day is an international observance on November 13. It was introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, a coalition of nations' kindness NGOs. It is observed in many countries, including Canada, Australia, Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates. Singapore observed the day for the first time in 2009. Italy and India also observed the day. In the UK, it is fronted by David Jamilly, who co-founded Kindness Day UK with Louise Burfitt-Dons.

History of Veterans Day

World War I – known at the time as “The Great War” – officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11, regardless of what day of the week on which it falls. The restoration of the observance of Veterans Day to November 11 not only preserves the historical significance of the date, but helps focus attention on the important purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

As a farmer, it is not always easy to be in compliance with farm programs, such as conservation initiatives. Rather than trying to resolve those differences in court, call Northern Community Mediation for assistance. Having a neutral mediator facilitate a conversation between the disputants is a much more effective means of resolving differences both in cost and emotional stress. Call 231.487.1771.

"Keeping the virtual doors of justice open to everyone in Michigan has never been more important,” said Chief Justice Bridget M. McCormack. “Opening up online dispute resolution to Charlevoix and Emmet county residents represents a huge step toward achieving that goal.”

Through MI-Resolve, parties can go online to negotiate directly with the other party, or have a Community Dispute Resolution Center (in this case, Northern Community Mediation) mediator help them resolve their dispute. If the dispute is resolved, the system produces the necessary court forms for filing in the individual courts. The system is a game-changer for people who are busy with work or children and can benefit from mediation without leaving home. Also, the service is free, involving no cost to the parties or court.

In 1845 Congress passed a federal law designating the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November as Election Day. Previously, states were allowed to hold elections any time they pleased within a 34-day period before the first Wednesday in December. This system had several flaws, however, including the potential for early voting results to affect turnout and sway opinion in states that held late elections, and those same last-minute voters could potentially decide the outcome of the entire election. Faced with these issues, Congress created the current Election Day in the hope of streamlining the voting process.

The use of mediation gives landlords and tenants an opportunity to discuss their disputes and resolve the disagreements on their own rather than having to go to court. Is the issue that the landlord has not fixed the kitchen sink? Is the concern that the tenant is leaving trash in the hallway? Do both the landlord and the tenant have grievances with one another?

By taking the time to sit down together with a neutral facilitator, landlords and tenants can resolve their own conflicts. In doing so, the relationship with one another is often improved because they have learned how to communicate and understand each other’s perspective.

National First Responders Day on October 28 recognizes the heroic men and women who make it their business to take immediate action when disaster strikes. Not sure what a first responder does? Just think about 9/11 for a moment. Firefighters, police, paramedics, and more — rushing into Lower Manhattan. Whether you’ve had your own emergency or not, it’s not hard to understand and appreciate the dangerous and difficult work they do.
