Dynamic Speech Therapy

Dynamic Speech Therapy Neurodiversity affirming mobile speech therapy practice. Based in northwestern Philadelphia Welcome!

My name is Patrick Griggs and I am the owner and founder of Dynamic Speech Therapy, which is a mobile pediatric speech practice. We provide therapy in-home, in schools/daycares, and in community based settings (library, community centers, parks, playgrounds etc.). In therapy, I focus on finding the root cause of a child’s difficulties. Going deeper than the surface allows us to make a functional impact for the child. I take a strengths based approach, which allows me to develop a strong social relationship with the children I work with. Having a strong relationship is crucial and the foundation for the development of new skills. Every child is unique, and they deserve an individualized plan to work on functional skills that will make an impact in their everyday lives.

Hi it’s me 👋🏻 I want to reintroduce myself and share some personal stuff, because that’s who I am. My name is Patrick, and I am the owner of DST. I started this practice in January of 2023, and I still work part time in an outpatient clinic that I’ve worked at since I graduated in 2018. This practice has been amazing and allowed me to meet and work with so many passionate families and amazing kids.
A few things about me:
- I got married in September 2023 (my wife is an OT working in a big hospital)
- I bought a house in February 2024
- I adopted 2 black kittens (that makes 4 cats total)
- I have grown to be an avid runner, and I am training for a 50 mile ultra marathon in May
I hope to grow more of a presence on here eventually, but I also strive to have a healthy balance between all things in my life - and life is BUSY right now. So for now, I’ll share a therapy video or a tip from time to time. I love to show off what therapy can be, because children deserve to have fun in therapy. Check out my website to learn more about my approach to therapy.

The ~kindest~ of messages going into the weekend
I’ve been doing a mix of models with this family: virtual, parent coaching, and some regular community based therapy (parks, coffee shops, fire stations).
The family carryover has really been the ~game changer~ though. This older gestalt language processor has started to open up so much with the consistency that has been provided between sessions. I am so excited for him and his family!

My favorite private session I’ve ever done. The firehouse.
🚒
My friend wanted to go to the firehouse, and that’s what we did. He is a new friend but today we really connected. It was so fun, and the firefighters at were very welcoming (turned on the lights and invited us to come check it out).
🚒
My friend was nervous about getting too close due to the potential that alarms and sirens could go off at any time they’d go out for a call. Smart call because one of the trucks did have to head out, exciting for us to see though! So we focused a lot on commenting today as we inspected the trucks from various angles.
🚒
These were some of the phrases I was modeling as we moved around. My friend had a lot of immediate echolalia today and that language trust is growing stronger.

This is just another one of those things that I wish they emphasized more in graduate school. As SLPs, it’s SO important to know how to support the sensory needs of the kids we work with so that they can be regulated for therapy. It should be a starting point in any therapy session.
So much of my therapy involves physical play. Running, jumping, spinning, swinging, crashing etc. (Although sometimes I started to feel dizzy😵‍💫, I can tell it makes the kids feel so good and regulated). Sometimes it’s sitting on the exercise ball, having a fidget, or even just having the lights off.
I like to think that kids love speech time because they know they will feel safe, supported, and comfortable. And THAT is what fosters a great therapeutic relationship and allows for growth and learning!
Just another for all of my sessions. I love to teach the kids I work with how to advocate for their sensory needs!

SAFETY. An essential component of therapy. If kids don’t feel safe during a therapy session, we can’t expect them to learn. We can do this by:
1. Acknowledging and accepting all play and communication.
2. Considering their sensory needs and supporting them.
3. Ensuring they are regulated.
4. Using a child led approach where you incorporate their strengths and interests to build and stretch skills.
5. Meet them where they are at. This can be variable, so we need to check in and make sure you are supporting them properly.
6. Show interest in what they are doing and how they are doing it.
7. &more!
The relationship that develops when you do these things is so strong and amazing.

Letting go of compliance in therapy has been amazing. Switching to a true child-led, strengths and interest based therapy approach has done wonders. And GUESS WHAT - my kids make more progress now!

No more power struggle. No more token boards. No more non-preferred, structured tasks/activities.

“Let kids lead” as says

Learning through play is EVERYTHING. And when you follow a child’s lead, it helps to make your models and interactions MEANINGFUL, and that is what helps them to learn.

This is one of my favorite ways to get parents and therapists to reflect on the language they are modeling to kids. If you already know the answer to the question you are asking, turn it into a statement!

-Instead of saying “who’s that?” when someone familiar walks in the room, say, “look! It’s mom!”
-Instead of saying “what’s that?” when reading a book, say, “that’s a ____!”

**this is especially important for gestalt language processors in NLA Stages 1-3.

Commenting on what our kids are doing and using declarative language is so important!
