⚡️FIRST WORDS TO TEACH YOUR LITTLE ONE!⚡️⁣

Focus on 𝐅𝐔𝐍𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐋 language 𝐅𝐈𝐑𝐒𝐓! Functional language refers to the words needed to express basic wants and needs. Words like: ⁣

➕ more ⁣
🛟 help ⁣
🙅‍♀️ all done⁣
🍔 eat ⁣
⬆️ up⁣
🟢 go⁣
🛑 stop⁣
👍🏼 yes⁣
❌ no⁣
🤱 mama/dada & important people’s names ⁣
💗 favorites: toys, food, drinks ⁣

🔆 Model functional words repeatedly throughout the day to help your child learn to communicate their wants and needs effectively and reduce any potential frustration! ⁣

✋🏼 𝗪𝐀𝐈𝐓 to focus on academic words later! While it can be impressive when a little one knows their colors, numbers, letters, etc., these words won’t exactly help them get their wants and needs met in their everyday routines.⁣

PSA: EARLY IDENTIFICATION AND INTERVENTION ARE KEY 🔑👶🏻🌟⁣

Why early intervention❓⁣

⭐️ The neural circuits in the developing brain are the most flexible and capable of change during the first three years of life. Over time, it becomes increasingly difficult to make significant changes in growth and development (Shonkoff et al., 2009).⁣

⭐️ Based on these basic principles of neuroscience, intervention is likely to be more effective when provided earlier in life (Shonkoff et al., 2009). Early diagnosis and treatment for developmental delays reduces the risk of ongoing difficulties and increases a child’s chances of improvement and long-term success! ⁣

⭐️ High quality early intervention services have been shown to positively impact outcomes across developmental domains, including health, language & communication, cognitive development, and social-emotional development (Goode et al., 2011).⁣

⭐️ The “wait-and-see” approach is outdated. Late talkers do not necessarily “catch up” to their same-age peers and can experience deficits in later developing language and literacy skills, executive functioning skills, emotional and behavioral regulation, social skills, and speech processing skills (Capone Singleton, 2018; Hawa & Spanoudis, 2014). Current research supports early identification and intervention!! ⁣

𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭! If you have any concerns regarding your child’s speech and language development, please do not hesitate to reach out to your state’s early intervention program or a certified speech-language pathologist. 💖⁣

HAPPY BETTER HEARING & SPEECH MONTH! 💬👂🏼💕 ⁣

This month provides an opportunity to raise awareness about speech, language, communication, & swallowing disorders in children and adults!⁣

👶🏻 most children develop speech and language skills within a specific age range, but a child who takes longer to learn a skill may have a problem ⁣

👩🏽 some speech, language, or communication problems persist into adulthood and others may happen after illness or other medical conditions (mouth or throat cancer, dementia, stroke) or injury (traumatic brain injury)⁣

❓Are you worried about your child’s speech, language, and communication development? ⁣

❓Do you suspect possible communication (speech, language, hearing) problems as a young, middle-aged, or older adult? ⁣

🤝 SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGISTS CAN HELP!⁣

This Better Hearing & Speech Month I encourage you to seek the help of a professional speech-language pathologist (SLP) to assist with the diagnosis and treatment of a possible communication disorder & improve your or your child’s quality of life! ⁣

LET IT SNOW ☃️❄️🌨⁣

These are some snow & snowman-themed favorites I’ve been using in therapy throughout the last month! ⁣

👇🏼 Check out these tips to make reading more fun for your preschooler @ home during winter! ⁣

❄️ Bundle up & read outdoors! Bring your little one’s favorite winter, snow, snowman, or arctic animal-themed book outside to read together in the snow!⁣

❄️ Build a reading fort! If it’s just too cold to go outside, grab some pillows and blankets, re-arrange some furniture, and build a reading fort. Have your child pick out a stack of books, crawl inside, get comfy, and read! ⁣

❄️ Read to your pets or stuffed animals! Bring your pet or a few stuffed animals into your reading fort for some extra company. Encourage your little one to “read” some of their favorite books to them! ⁣

☃️ What’s your child’s favorite winter-themed book? ⁣

✨ MILESTONE MONDAY: Question milestones for children age 3-4 years ✨⁣

💡Did you know? A child’s ability to ask and answer questions is an important aspect of language development!⁣

❔The ability to ask & answer questions allows children to participate in conversations, demonstrate knowledge, and to seek and relay information about themselves and their environment.⁣

🌟 ASKING QUESTIONS 🌟⁣
👧🏽 Children age 3-4 years can:⁣
💓ask one word “why” questions ⁣
💓use “what,” “where,” “when,” “how,” & “whose” when asking questions⁣
💓ask “is” questions⁣
💓invert auxiliary & subject in 𝘸𝘩- questions, such as “Where is Dad going?”⁣

*Children age 4 years can:⁣
💓ask the following types of questions using correct grammatical structure:⁣
-early infinitive: “Do you want to…?”⁣
-future: “Are we going to…?”⁣
-modal can/may: “Can you…?”⁣

WINTER ACTIVITIES ❄️🧣⛄️⁣

Opportunities to build your child’s speech and language skills are 𝘦 𝘷 𝘦 𝘳 𝘺 𝘸 𝘩 𝘦 𝘳 𝘦 !⁣ ⁣

👇🏼Read below for ideas to promote your child’s speech & language skills at home this winter! ⁣

🧣Bundle up & get outdoors! Identify different body parts and label all the winter clothing items you put on. Make sure you’ve got your hat, coat, scarf, gloves, and snow boots! ⁣

⛄️ Build a snowman. Work on basic concepts while building a snowman together. Talk about how big or small the snowballs are and where parts of the snowman’s face and accessories go. Where does his nose go? Above or below his eyes? ⁣

❄️ Make winter crafts. Collect some snow, branches, pine needles, pine cones, etc. and bring them inside to create a winter sculpture or sensory bin! ⁣

🍪 Bake cookies. Practice sequencing and following directions while baking. Narrate what you are doing, modeling lots of descriptors and action words specific to baking cookies, e.g.,“sweet,” “chewy,” “bake,” “stir.”⁣

📚 Read winter-themed books. Emphasize and talk about all of the winter vocabulary words. Practice asking and answering WH-questions about each story. ⁣

☃️ What winter activities do you and your little one enjoy?⁣

LEAVES LEAVES LEAVES 🍁📚🍂⁣

These are some fall favorites I’ve been using in therapy over the last several weeks! ⁣

👇🏼 Check out these helpful tips for reading with your preschooler @ home: ⁣

🍁 Try reading at least 3 books a day - two familiar stories and try adding one that is new!⁣

🍁 Point out letters & sounds. Point out the letters in your child’s name. Talk about the sound each letter makes. Clap out the syllables in the characters’ names. ⁣

🍁 Encourage conversation. Allow plenty of time to look at and talk about the pictures. Pause and ask questions about the characters and events. ⁣

🍂 Does your little one have a favorite fall-themed book? ⁣
